Microsoft begs to differ:

They have a new OS they are working on from the ground up, 100% orriginal code. It's called "Singularity", and it's kernal has been sucessfully coded in C# (actually, a derrivitive of C# called sing#, but it's still C# )
it's actually a MicroKernal, and is based on giving more security.

it's an interesting topic

what do you guys think?

here's more:

if you haven't noticed, technology has changed a TON, so have OS's, but we're hanging onto legacy code so we don't get these whiners that want their old crap software to work :p

My only dependencies on Windows atm are my programming tools, Visual Studio & DarkBASIC. Seriously, everything else would work on Linux... Hrmm...

Within a couple of months, the current 0.9 will be stable enough to use for any windows app.

what's this have to do with anything?
I don't care what you think about WINDOWS, this is NOT windows (even if it's made by MS, it's not Windows), this is a much BETTER and more POWERFUL Kernel than any we have now (except maybe Mac, they didn't include that in the study, I wonder why )

wine is good, but not good enough. You wont have 100% compatibilaty with DBP or VB.net

This is good news! ReactOS and Wine have been working together to make a windows alternative, so hopefully this will accelerate both projects.

I just can't wait for C++#-%!****.net to come out. Because soon after comes the release of the C#-+-+_+-%&**###.biz version for windows foobar.

No, its practically flawless. In development for 12 years for god sake! Why would they bother making it if it wasn't 100%?

Ignorance is bliss obviously

Pretty much, I haven't tested it since 2004, but it was able to play UT and Half-life pretty much flawlessy.

I never tried DBP apps, but on the last newsletter they were in the process of adding DX9 support; so in theory, after that is *should* be practically flawless.

The main problems that Wine faces are the mundane ones:
* copy protection
* installshield
* memory management on more abstract programs

EDIT: The main thing that Wine has problems with in regards to DX is VertexShaders. This is one of the reasons Halo and other similar games don't run (but weirdly HL2 runs fine, if a bit slow)

C# kicks ass if you like C programming. I hate the syntax, but I love the objects and how much it's just basically VB with c syntax. But then (for me) why not just use VB? If I were forced to use C I'd use C#.

David R, WOW! Unreal Tournement 1 and half-life! MODERN GAMES TO TEH MAX! I MEAN THOSE GAMES ARE TEH AWESOME! Wine "In Theory" should. In theory. Wine works fine until you actually get to the part of making a game with good models, or any effects. Then It dies. I dis-like linux, sure, but I use it. I like windows much better. Many more of my programs run on it. SRY UR A WINDWS H8r

Singularity? or ReactOS? the topic has changed so much I don't know what you're talking about

anyway, I don't know much about Singularity but I would also really like to see the source :p. But the chances of that happening.... yeah

really exciting to read about, but I assume we wont be able to see anything from it (Alpha or Betas) for a long while...
