Ayone trying to get a job useing a computer watch out if someone is over qualified on there resume they will take your job/promotion even if they cant do the job at all, and after that you the one who has been doing the job for a few years has to train the person who should already be the master of his work but knows nothing and i mean nothing .

Speaking from personal experience?

I have no degree, I just get by on skill - it's easy around here to pwn a whole IT department, you just gotta ensure that your the only one who really knows how things work - don't go training anyone unless it benefits you. Be loud as well, make sure people know who you are and what you do, does'nt hurt to keep them thinking that your the one looking after things.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Empire Building isn't always the best approach, it can backfire on you. An old empire-building, self-preserving boss of mine had to go into hospital. When a particuler critical system went down the directors realised he was the only one who had any knowledge of it. He was given his official warning at his hospital bed.

The other thing I would say is that a job is not just about ability. It's also about attitude, application, motivation, leadership, persona and a whole host of other things. So if you are seen to begrudge others for their position, whatever the reason, the chances are it will happen to you time and time again. The best thing you can do is cut your losses and prove your worth. If you are better than this guy, then make sure you are seen to be better, through positive actions not negative ones.

Just go and make everyone feel that they're valued, even though you're infinitely better than they are.

Nobody likes you if you're crap, nobody likes you if you're the Overlord and just really good... Apart from the brown-nosers

the guy has 0 of these, just alot of motivation when he sees his boss.
but my point is theres other ppl who should of got the job that already work there and have years in the field and know it inside out but i guess they want someone who is useless and everyone else know it, just gos to show how messed up the world is.

Yep. Thats pretty much how it goes. Contractors should also be shot too. Our nickname for them generally has one of the letters replaced with another letter for immediate jokes. They don't care because they drive around in gold palaces. Heh, I remember once seeing a contractor writing code while constantly looking in a C++ for beginners book (around the first or second chapter type level). Luckily this didn't matter as our company employed him for years (almost unheard of for them) before he could leave fully C++ed up with loads of references. We couldn't be trained on it because we had to carry on with the legacy system. Grrrr......

My old boss was quite good as he never employed anyone on a higher wage, even if better qualified or older. But he gives older more qualified people a good chance to prove why they should be paid more than X percent of his department. Before he arrived I had a friend (who was a team leader) who had to train someone 10 years older than him, who he knew for a fact was on more money (because they were older and had worked *coff* at a fridge factory for a while at management level - but not doing any of the skills for this new job). Well got on his wick that one did. I also remember someone who worked for me leaving after 3 months because he couldn't handle the fact I was almost a decade younger than him (with around 5 years experience in the company and a degree he didn't have at all). Luckily he too had been a manager in KFC or someplace (honest, twas one of the fast food places), and got took up as a team leader at a friends (who was the manager) firm. Totally annoyed the good lads who had programmed there for like years. His friend then left after a week, and the dumb directors made him the manager (with his amazing 5 star managerial skills). They then sent him jetsetting around the world most of the time, and he seemed quite good at this (who isn't?) so they made him a director. Last time I heard they were considering making him MD (this was about 5 years ago, so can safetly assume he is second in command at MS by now....). Oh, and he wasn't exactly very good either. Would have been a close line on sacking him after the 3 months probationary if he hadn't of left anyhows....

Must. Control. Fist. Of. Death..........

Cheers

Yes! Yes! Doesn't it always bloody seem that way? Honestly my biggest words of advice after over a decade working in IT run something like:-

To get a good (ie. money) career in IT then:-
1. Quit the "real" IT, and become a project manager (or pet monkey depending on how you translate the letters PM in your company). They get paid a lot more and don't need any qualifications. You just need to be a bit of a gobby git. Same as sales really.
2. Become a contractor. Everyone will hate you, but hey they are just jealous. And drinking in the pub on your own is nowhere near as bad as in the past
3. Be a real brown nose git. This *really* works....
4. Become a member of one of those silly handshake gangs. *Really*.... It's amazing how many ****wads stay in jobs you would have been booted out of years ago for doing twice as good. Not easy though without male relatives in the following...
5. Quit your job. Constant jumping from company to company amazingly almost cements decent wage increases. And these days noone seems to care about loyalty! It's great! Or so I've heard....
6. If you are in a decent company, that amazingly doesn't employ anyone stupidely (bosses son, or grandad) above you, then working all hours that god sends, for about a decade, can sometimes help. Assuming the boss doesn't sell the company down the river just when things are looking goodish.....
7. Become old. It's amazing how much respect that gets if you look particularly wisely. And it's automatic decent wage from most places
8. Choose a stupid department (training for example) to raise quickly in. Once at managerial level then sit back and play Lemmings. Or whatever the managerial kids are playing these days Almost deffo decent job offers when you lose this one. Become a director and you practically walk on water (anyone see Brainiac where they walked on custard? Awesome!!!). Even if the company that offers you the job is doing something *totally* different (say, oh I don't know, speeding cameras, rather than, oh I don't know again, travel systems) then all is ok. And your wife will get a job too....

Not bitter on anything. But I wish my dad had a double barrelled name and wore antlers at the weekend...... You know what I mean (wink wink). C'mon let me in....

Cheers
