Hi, would you think that a PM system would be a good idea to have in the forums? I think it would be so I could probably contact people easier instead of having to get an IM account (which I hate) or having to have an e-mail war back and forth. Just a suggestion, and I think I could program it if it comes down to it.

Hey, I am a total noob to DBP, so if you would be kind enough to just help me along.

It would be a welcome feature, don't know how Rich feels about it - but as a mod I'd rather have people contact me through PM's than email, it's just quicker and neater to have PM convo's.

I agree with that 100%. I think that sharing your email isn't always the best thing to do, and making a fresh new one is just a pain. PM systems are much better.

In my opinion it would be a bad idea. The higher ranking users would get too many pm's off new starters.

The only way that it would work is if the moderators approved all pm's before they reached the recipient. That way there would be no spamming, swapping of illegal content etc.

Thats why there would be an abuse PM topic in which people can tell others about spammers and they can block them from sending PMs out to them.

What about an Allow/Block system.. For example, you can either have it so by default anyone can send you a message, or no-one can send you a message.

Then you can add individuals to your Allow List or Block List... And a 'report message' thing wouldn't go amiss

'Course, it'd probably be a complete bugger to code

Not really. You could look at code from other forums software and see if you can get the hang of it.

that sounds much better then forcing the mods to wade through not only new people's posts but also every single pm...and having a abuse report thing in the PMs would also just add to workload...

but just allowing you to block somebody from sending you PMs (or block everybody, then unblock a few people) would be much easier on the mods/admin...

IPB has it. I could let you look at the code if you like.

a pm system in apollo eh? well after my experience i find it very usefull. allthough i have not been messing around with it much, but there have been some times when i really need to speak to someone, and sending an approval message over email and ask if he could go online, or finding an email that does not exist. it is a pain

im up for PM system

I do not like the idea of approved PMs. They are private and should not be able to be viewed by anyone, even staff.

what would probably be the best way to do it, is to start with "block all" then when you browse the forum, see people who you know are friendly or you chat with through im or chat rooms, you do invitations, like a buddy list. then when you go through the pm system, it will say at the top "X want you to be on their buddy list, click here to see list" then a simple yes/no next to it so it can either add or just stay blocked.

so say for example over a period of a month you *should* have the relevent people who you would wish to talk to and then over time you build from that.

Yes, a PMS would be great. I love it when other boards have PMS.

I vote for PMS on Apollo.

Dont copy code from other forums. PM systems arent complex. If he coded his own forum, a pm system (mind no security) would be teh easy.

Only you can turn a grammar mistake into a 2 sentence report. And I was responding to The poster of this threads comments to copy IPB code

Better getting flooded with private messages than e-mails.
Besides, there's people here that don't display their e-mails, and I'd like to talk to. Since I can't PM them, the only other way is to make an @ thread ("@somebody:...").

Anything on this site can be viewed by staff if they need too. As long as it's being stored in a database as plain text it's there. So basically, if you're planning on PMing somebody to plan a murder or something, probably not the best idea.

Well, with the PM system you could block members, shut off PM, and enable all PMs. What do you think?
