http://www.google.com/adsense
Does anyone else use google adsense?

It seems like a pretty good scheme actually. I added some banners to the bottom of my website a few days ago to give it a go.

For those who don't know, it's completely free, and you basically choose the size/style/colour of banner you want (The adverts at the bottom of this page are google adsense adverts I believe) and then pop them on your website on whichever pages you want and wherever you want. Then, everytime someone visits your page and clicks on the banner, you get paid.

ok, so you don't get paid much (I made 13 cents in the first day ) but if you have a website which has a lot of traffic going through it might be a good idea to give it a go - you can stop at any time too. Only thing is, you have to have made $50 before you can get paid (Either by cheque or eft)

I know many of you probably know about this already, but I thought I'd just let everyone know...

I use it on my commercial site. It pays for my hosting. Every once in a while I hit big with a $5 payout on a single click, and the odd payout of $1 - $3.

Yeah it works very well for us here (and on the main site). Pays for what we spend on Google AdWords ourselves.

Hmm.. the clever bastards!

I use it on my personal site and the money it brings in covers the hosting easily.

HA!
You just want us to go to your site and click on the ads...
Whatever, *Click*. There's some money.

Also, your Earth program looks cool, but the link doesn't work...

Edit: Darnit! You have to be 18 to get it.

Hey! Can't you get Ad-sense, and then click on it a trillion times to get money?

That's known as ghost clicks, they monitor things like that very carefully. They'll know something's up when they see the same IP repeatedly clicking the link and then leaving the page straight away. At which point, your account will be revoked as well as any money earned from it.

$1000 a day!...that's $365,000 a year!...more than most peoples salaries - how many impressions/clicks do you get a day?

I made 57 cents yesterday I've been looking for ways to get more traffic to my site - I've submitted one of my games to download.com so hopefully when that's been processed it'll gnerate a bit more traffic...

No, it says in the FAQ that you're not allowed to click on it yourself, or put massive signs on your site saying "CLICK ON THE BANNER!!!" lol

Robin
ps. Sorry about the broken link - I'm sorting it out now...

The site, on average, has 450,000 to 500,000 hits per day using over 2Gb of bandwidth each day. Its a very popular site. It also uses Adwords to bring people to it.

Can't they also see which IP addresses are using the ad's to go to google, and then if they see an off number of clicks on the ad's bust someone that way?

Then you can just go and click the link on other people's sites, then they'll get banned? Woohoo! (j/k)

Didn't that cost any money? It used to be free ('99 or 2000), and then it went to around $75US per submission. I'll look into that today because I have a good amount of visitors on my site, but I don't make a dime from ads :-|

yeah it's free!

Just don't select the option where it'll be submitted quickly (The free listing package). I chose the free option, and it says it should be up by nov 29th...takes about 3 weeks or so.

Hey guys.

Google Adsense sounds interesting but I have one question. What's the tax situation if you live in USA? Do you have to pay the taxes for the money you make?

Yes, you have to submit tax information before you can recieve your money, but you don't have to give this information right away when you sign up. I haven't submitted tax information, and I'm going to wait until I get a reasonable sum of money before I do so. There is a helpful wizard type of thing which guides you through to select the correct tax form and fill it out. I went part of the way through it and then decided to wait until I have earned some money. I live in the UK, and I'm not a company - I do not sell anything on my website either, everything's free. I'm hoping this will mean I won't get taxed much but really I don't know

Robin

ps. Google has many useful tools - here's one I just found:
http://www.google.com/analytics
Give really detailed stats on your site apparently, and it's free. Only thing is, they're not letting anyone sign up atm. you can try and then fill in the form to be notified when the service is available again though...

Yah, I don't understand. I get tons of visitors, as checking out the WordTrix high score list anyone can see, yet in a month I've only had 3 clicks = $0.13 for my bidvertiser ads. Obviously it takes great skill to tailor the perfect ads for the perfect subset of customers.

Yeah - I'm not sure exactly how it calculates how much you get...

Nicholas Thompson:
I'm still amazed at how you make so much money...I can't even see the adverts on your website (Or are you talking about another website you have?) How many clicks/impressions do you get on average to make $1000 a day?

If I managed to get even half that amount I wouldn't get a job lol

"Obviously it takes great skill to tailor the perfect ads for the perfect subset of customers."

Nowadays it does, yes. A few years ago I used to use all the affiliate marketting schemes, and I found the best ways were to find search engines that would allow text links of single words, and pay for a click, so it wasn't an obvious advert, just a link to give you more information about a certain product. For example you can quite easily set up Fan websites and have text links to their albums / dvds etc on a site, or link to search engine sposored results for them, and just use the words as underlined hyperlinks in paragraphs of interesting and relevant information. I got SOOO many more click throughs from things like that than the most colourfull and well desigmed banners...

Jeku, I'm in the same boat

I think I've earnt a total of $4 from mine so far with a huge number of impressions per day. But having said that, I did kinda put the ads right at the bottom of the page which is one of the worst spots

Adsense was a really easy setup. I get around 20-40,000 hits each month at my website. It'll be nice to rake in a little cash if this really works. I added the banners to the top of my site.

Its the site I do for work, but I'd prefer not to give it out... As an update, we had our first $1000 day yesterday We made $1020 in one day. This month we made $22,000 from Adsense.

The reason we do so well is we have the page arranged so the most appropriate ads are displayed. It also depends on your visitor. If its a techie site, I doubt many techies click ad links (due to the amount of utter rubbish that can come of it), however less experienced users do click them.

A few things to bear in mind about google. The googlebot reads your page top to bottom. This means it weighs content at the top more important than content at the bottom. This means you should keep your headers and titles as close to the top of the page as possible. Also, I think using META tags helps out google a LOT.

Bear in mind, the site I am talking abuot gets about 250,000 hits per day. 1 weeks log files from Apache from 1 site is over 600Mb. Its an incredibly heavily used site. I've only been in charge of it for about 2 months and I am working with the current webmaster for it to move it onto a CMS.

Has anyone used a CMS they could recommend? I'm currently playing with drupal. Looks good.

Well, heck, if google traces your ip, just use dial up, and keep dialing up after clicking! lol. IT would work until google calls up your ISP and asks all the customers that use those ip addressess! lol.

@Nick - That's very interesting! For a CMS, I just switched my Automaton Games website over to e107 (http://www.e107.org)--- it's fairly powerful and allows you to customize everything. I'm not sure if it's better than drupal, though.

Nicholas, that's amazing that a business can make that much in one month for advertising in this fashion. Right now mine says I've made 7 cents. It'd be nice if Microsoft would let me put my google ads on their site for 1 day and let me keep the cash. If what I think is correct, I could pay off all my bills and have a nice christmas!
