hi,my game starts in a dark forest,& my player has to go through the forest to get to a mansion where all the fun & scarey stuff will happen.

i cant come up with any ideas to make my forest scarey.

ahm lets see, you could dull down the light, a.k.a. put fog on colour it black bring it close in.

Couple random noises of bats / bush's ratling when you hit the branches of the trees etc.. etc..

I remember a horror style game i made in a forest, basically had a bunch of scary children singing in the background, and a big massive monster coming out of no where, scared the hell outta me even if i knew it was coming children singing attatched, i know it does sound farmiliar wonder who will guess where it's from first.

Im not an expert but i think u maybe could put some eyes in the bushes blinking at the player,
or some kind of skeleton which ist only standing there, and everytime u do not see it it moves a little bit closer to u, if u do not look at it for a long time it will reach u and kill u.
but the ideas above are very good too.
U should maybe go to some kind of a horror page or so...

I recommend:

Hands that grab you from under the fallen leaves.
Bats/crows that fly across the players view.
Creaking branches.
Brief flashes of red eyes blinking in the darkness.
Howls of wolves.
Trees that move (walk about) when you're not looking at them.
A blockage of the path, so they have to go into the dark undergrowth.
A 'spider area' (take a tip from LoTR) - webs and such.
Large spiders that drop from high branches when the player is near.

Hope that helps. Think what scares you and your friends - and use that if you can. Just don't have a bunch of snotty nosed teenagers with a videocamera, please.

How about trees that randomly stick branches out at you.
Just a small suggestion.
