Blue Sky Campaign.

Remember when games went 'Plinky Plonk' instead of 'Die mutha!!!'?

No, I don't want all games to feature fluffy pink bunnies with red shoes that jump on people's heads - but after seeing so many grey sky or nighttime downright dully-unpleasant games, I could do with a bit of a change.

It's like the games industry is going through the "moody teenager" phase, where it's not cool to be happy and "No-one understands me!!!"

I agree totally! Good link, it has some great tips on how to avoid becoming cliched. Blue sky games are fresh, however if they convert Splinter Cell over then I'm never playing them again

agreed on the blue sky thing but if a game has to be moody and dark then make it more artistic and creative then just gangs and sensless violence.

This is causing a conflict. The gamer side of me says "great, at last someone is doing something about the problems in todays games" but the game maker side of me says "noooo, don´t tell them that. There goes my chance of creating better than comercial games".
They certainly like Sonic on that site.

My signature has been erased by me because it's LARGE.

Its good but sometimes for the mood its got to be grey or a darker colour like night time. A game isnt bad because it has dark skys storys need conflict especially war stories.

I agree with this Too many games are depressing for the sake of it. Thats not to say I want all gritty realistic "teenage" games banned or anything, I just hate the way that colourful or imaginative games get dissmissed as "kids games"...

Every now and then people pop up here and ask for your top ten favourite games of all time, and my top ten always includes Nights, Mario64, Daytona, Sonic, SFII and many orther bright games. The only slightly darker ones that get a mention would be FFVII and the original DOOM, and those are practically blindingly colourful by today's standards!

The GTA series since GTA3 has been great fun BUT It has spawned some truly awful closes and games trying to be cool.

Look what happenned recently to Jak & Daxter, Spiderman, Tony Hawks, Need For Speed, even Sonic (Shadow game) - ok so those sequels were all great, but they still all became very dark in both "street" influence and colours...

I associate myself entirely with this crusade.

I am also sick of tiresomely depressing games. Two of my favourite games of all time were:

1. Rainbow Islands (Amiga); and
2. New Zealand Story (Amiga)

We need more CHEERFUL, HAPPY games like them!!

Cheer if you like bears! Cheer if you like jam sandwiches!

As an artistic medium, games have room for all kinds of moods and themes. I would be very disappointed with the industry if all the games with serious content suddenly went away.

War isnt happy if it were we would do it more often. Whats the challenge if your wondering around all happy and high?? Challenges invole pain and hard ache its what makes a detailed and realistic story.

But constant blue skies is unrealistic - its much better to have, like NFS:MW variable weather, where it can go from nice happy blue skies to miserable grey skies with rain - which goes well with trying to ram police vechiles off the road.

The problem is that we don't seem to be able to create a balance. At the moment - the vogue is for dark, moody, angst-ridden 'games' where it's always dark/raining, no-one ever smiles and even if you 'win' it's a bitter, hollow success.

That's fair enough - I know, I worked on two of the worst offenders. But even icecream gets boring if that's all you eat

A range of games, games you can pick up and be happy about - the gaming equivalent of a comedy film and/or crowd pleaser has as much place as the current fashion for the gaming equivalent of horror/gang films.

It is uncanny

I agree - we need more happy games

Then again, I think the reason these "war" games are so much fun is because its a good war to release anger without actually killing anyone

Would someone tell me WHY the hell Shadow the hedgehog now uses a glock?

I don't mind Sega branching off their Sonic characters into other games, but please - don't put the blue founding father to shame.

Or it could be 'Beat' Takeshi as Zatoichi, the blind samurai.

Who can say for sure though, eh?

As for Shadow with a gun, well - they couldn't give Sonic one, so they had to make a new character to have one. Because all cool people have guns, right? Right? Hello?

Shadow's been around for a while though...they didn't just make him up and put a gun in his hand.

Fable has a great balance of dark and light material. Other games such as Age of Mythology, Halo, Morrowind... hell, I'd even venture most games present a serious and engorssing experience with plenty of humor and light action to keep it from being too grim. I see what you mean about some games not having balance, but sometimes it's best left out. System Shock 2 was pretty much pants-wetting, nerve-wracking horror straight through and anything else would have watered down the experience. And there are still all the arcade games, Final Fantasies, and other anime of its ilk for people who want light, fluffy action - in fact, I know it's an oft cited statistic but over 200% more games are rated E than movies are G, and far less are rated M than movies are rated R.

I agree with quite a bit that site... I think there are WAY too many gta copy cats. Today’s larger market has forgotten that kids are the next generation by definition. And in response to Ian T, Fable rocks. Go decision making.

And while we're on happy looking games, check out my game in the WIP board.

Megaton - have you actually played Shadow? Its a surprisingly cool game

For example, rings now work as a power bar, when you get hit you loose ten, rather than all of them. Thats a real step in the right direction to making 3d sonic games less frustrating.

I don't really like a sonic character using guns, but there are some really cool huge FF style swords, and metal slug style mechs to ride in should you feel like it.

The really cool thing about it is that in each level you have 2 characters telling you what to do, one evil, one good. You can choose to listen to or ignore them. Hense you can play the level as a good guy, bad guy or as a rebel doing what you want and ignoring them. I think thats a really cool idea, it kinda makes you question your own morals and values, like Black & white

You don't HAVE to pick up the weapons. You don't have to shoot anything. You can just run to the end of the level like Sonic would. Or you can shoot all the bad guys. Or you can shoot the good guys and turn evil. Its really quite clever Shadow is on a voyage of discovery to discover who he really is, whether he is a hedgehog or an android, and whether his mind washing/programing forces him to be evil or whether he can make the life choice to be good, and save Sonic, Amy et all

Of course, the camera is still as appalling as any cameras in 3d sonic games, and its still too easy and short. But its a lot more a sucessful sidestep for sonic games than Chaotix, Sonic Drift or Sonic Fighters for example

It may be cool, but I prefer to keep my Sonics and my GTAs seperate.

(Though the idea of a "Run-By" with a gun does sound funny. )

I agree But my point was you don't HAVE to be bad, you don't have to shoot things, you can play it just like a Sonic game if you want too Its not as cool or colourful as Sonic Heroes though, and Sonic Rush is brilliant if u own a DS
