I got me a PSP today, but currently have no games for it. I want to play something on the train home from work and I walk by a Game store on the way to the station.. What game should I buy first?

I trust most of the members of this forum - so advise away please

Cheers guys,
Nick

Wipeout Pure is supposed to be good, but suffers from slowdown. Aside from that, I dont the details of any other games...

It does look good - seen a demo video of that, looks ok. Certainly looks fun - but I also saw what you meant about slowdown...

Anyone else? or are me and SSS the only ones who have used a PSP?

Everyone´s raving about the new GTA game. You might want to check it out.You could use http://www.gamerankings.com/ to find the highest rated PSP games. Anything with a 95% or more is quite good.

My signature has been erased by me because it's LARGE.

My vote would go to Mercury, or the new Gradius game (which isn't out yet I don't think). I won't buy a PSP, but I thought Mercury played really nice in-store

I have seen the video for mercury and it does look really good fun! Sort of like Hamsterball with a liquid blob.

Gradius I haven't heard of... Googling now...

Lumines is on the PSP and... gay. Games like Lumines are what the DS is for. Because it's a pansy little system.

Well, to me it depends.. Do you have a bigger memory stick than the one it comes with?

Do you have version 1.5?

If so, i suggest homebrew.. It's all about playing all of your fun emulators on it, aswell as playing UMD's.

WindowsXP Home(Service pack 2), Athlon XP 2400+(2.01Ghz), 1GIG Ram, Ati Radeon 9800Pro 128MB.

Lumines is sexy, Jimmy is the pansy.

That Wipeout Pure does look pretty sweet, and there's methods for getting around version checks...

WipEout Pure is great fun, but Coded Arms wasn't as good as I had expected it to be. I'm waiting for Pursuit Force, that looks great. I'm thinking of getting Mercury, it does look great.

[off-topic]And Jimmeh, I've never dissagreed with you before, but the time has come... what is gay about Nintendogs ? Mario Kart DS rules on the DS. And here's hoping I'll be seeing Resident Evil: Deadly Silence soon (but admittedly, the PSP is all-round a more versatile system).[/off-topic]

Ooo never expected this much response!! Cheers guys!

I bought GTA in the end as my mate at work has GTA and a PSP so we're gonna give it a go in multiplayer

@UFO: Cheers for that - I am working on a new site which will tell me when I get a guestbook entry. Just need to find time to finish it! [EDIT]Doesn't look spammed to me...[/EDIT]

@Dot Merix - I have V2.0 (it came with it). Whats this homebrew thing? I've bought a 2Gb stick off eBay. Should come in the next few days (was only about £80 inc P&P and insurace!)

Lumines is a very good game, perfect for a portable. One of the troubles with psp is the lack of truly "portable" games ie ones you could easily play for a few minutes whilst waiting for a bus - or even on the bus with the cruddy suspension bouncing you around. Puzzle games fit that bill quite nicely, as do more arcade style pick up and play titles

Burnout Legends essentially IS Burnout 3 - I haven't noticed much difference except for some framerate issues. And since Burnout 3 is one of the bestest games evererererer I'd recommend it if you don't have the ps2 or pref xbox version...

@ Nick - to run most homebrews I think you'll have to downgrade your bios - possible, but be carefull not to accidentally replace the bios with one of the virii pretending to be psps bioses! You can play snes games quite nicely, but personally I'd recommend a GP32/2x if you want emaultion, psp if you want ps2 style games

Hmm... Do you think homebrews will be an option for 2.0 soon? (ie someone will update the program?)

I'd love to get an Amiga emulator working on it!

I know what you mean about the "pickup and play" games... But where I live, you wouldn't want to stand at a bus stop and use it.. You WILL get killed. Its not so bad on the train though (especially the 40 minute commute I have) as everyone either doesn't give a damn about you or is sleeping.

GTA is very nice. The graphics are unbelievable for such a small device!!!

I have, however, noticed a single dead pixel in the center of the screen. Its only a problem on dark scenes though. Oh well!

I hope so but I don't know - Sony is working hard to squash the homebrew side of things - which to me appears to be a "shooting themselves in the foot" tactic...

"I'd love to get an Amiga emulator working on it!"
Me too I've just bought an Amiga 1200 again with an eye to upgrading it as much as possible and sticking a large hdd in it, to install all my old favourite games, and not have to bother with disk swapping an loading times

"where I live, you wouldn't want to stand at a bus stop and use it.. You WILL get killed."
Lol yes itslike that in certain areas here. IPods are the major problem though, people see the earbuds and will stop you going down the street!

"I have, however, noticed a single dead pixel in the center of the screen."
Yes, unfortunately Sony are quite facist with their return policy for dead pixels Thats the major factor stopping me buying units cheaper online

I doubt it matters where you buy it, online or HMV, it'd still obide by the same Dead Pizel Policy.

Once of the first thing they recommend when you get an iPod is to scrap the headphones for that very reason!

I had an Amiga 500 and some of the best games I've ever played in my life (so far) has been on that device. For a machine of 7Mhz, 1Mb RAM and a floopy drive - it was amazing!

Sony like shooting themselves in the feet - They should get some kind of automatic foot shooter - it'd be much more efficient that doing things like stomping on people producing free content for their platform (and thus making more people want to buy the damn thing!) and othe tactics such as installing insecure security software which provides a nice little home for virii, whilst also paying people to steal GPL code

(NDS stands for Nintendo DS )

But, if you want to get your hands on a homebrew devkit, go to www.devkitpro.org - WinterMute has made devkits for heaps of different consoles, that's where I got my DevKitARM for the NDS, and you can get the devkitPSP from there

Jess.

My mate owns a PSP, both Wipeout and Lumines are a great way to waste away a few minutes waiting for the train (or a couple hours in a lecture).

@Jess - so that devkit allows you to write your own games in C++?

Sure does

Good luck figuring it out, though
I know there are a load of NDS/GBA/GP32 examples available via CVS, but I'm not sure about PSP, so you may want to look up a tutorial for it

Yeah but I'd make them take it out the box and boot it up BEFORE I paid for it

"Once of the first thing they recommend when you get an iPod is to scrap the headphones for that very reason!"
Yep! lol

"I had an Amiga 500 and some of the best games I've ever played in my life (so far) has been on that device. For a machine of 7Mhz, 1Mb RAM and a floopy drive - it was amazing!" - Yes awesome machines, great games, great software and great development possiblities

I bought Everybodies Golf this evening and played it on the way home from work. Its great fun! Its really not the kind of golf game which takes itself seriously. Its just a plain fun and simple golf game, with good physics. Its weird - but the physics of a game like that matter more to me than graphics or anything else, kinda like racing games!

Haven't played the PSP version, but the franchise has been around for a while - they've always been fun Reminiscent of Mario Golf but slightly more realistic ball physics
