I'm going to have to give a presentation, with Powerpoint and everything, in my CS pretty soon on some geeky/nerdy topic. Some examples of presentation topics given so far are: CSS, Flash, D, and Software Patents. Any ideas on what mine should be about?

You could do it on the electronic frontier foundation (http://www.eff.org) ---- I did one on them and got loads of information from their website.

the history of input devices

start with something like when the mouse was born and then onto tablets cameras etc..

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Great idea maybe you could also explain how sony is getting sued by like everyone and how their excuse is that no one knows what rootkits are except everyone and how it caused world of warcraft to be hacked and how stupid sony was for doing that
That would be a very good pres. the title can be:

Critical system and how they go wrong (should be plenty of stories on the net). Most fun. We had lectures in uni about such things as the airbus (loads of bad things there), the ambulance phone system (oh dear), the US missile defence system (DEFCON thingy and problems with the moon etc), oh and nuclear weapons with electrical storms. Loads of fun

Oh and angle the talk to the idea about bad programming. Which most of it was. Ambulance phone service was the best (999/911 phone up for medical aid). They made the new system handle something like twice the average of the old one. Unfortuantly this average is massively exceeded now and again. So they shoved it live (and didn't run in parallel with the old one - just shut it down), and apparently completely froze the service because it couldn't handle when things got busy. A few people died from that one....

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

How long does the presentation have to be? I once covered the MS anti-trust case back in highschool, but I had to speak for 20-30 minutes

Write about the history of a programming language such as C or as programming languages period

@dazzag
I bet that would be fun to write about

You could do one for all the reasons that people who ACTAULLY know how to use computers try to avoid powerpoint at all costs.... or maybe thats just me

It could be funny though if done properly - an ironic Powerpoint slideshow - "I hate they way it does" (predictable generic fade) "Predictable Generic Fades!" "and the way people think its clever to" (Insert bad clipart or "amusing" jpg everyone's seen before) "Put in media they didn't make" (cruddy looking special effect) "don't own the copyright to" (another cruddy looking special effect, with an added annoying cartoon boink sound effect) "and has little to do with the subject matter" ( random but common flash animation involving either llamas, badgers or banana phones )
