I'm going to my cousin's house for the weekend. Since I won't be here on Thursday (tomorrow) I'm doing this now. Have a good Thanksgiving everyone.

You don't have Thanksgiving in England? If you seriously don't know then look at an American history book. But in summary, it's:
- Food
- Spending time with family

And eating food until you get so full you can't get up.

It's about time someone introduced thanksgiving to England.

There is no reason to, although I suppose we could celebrate the Battle Of Hastings, by having a public holiday. Or how about some battle during the civil war ? Or perhaps the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 ?

To be honest, there should really be a public holiday on my birthday...

Tut tut!

If your American, you should really know English history. I thought everyone knew about the Peterloo Massacre...

We haven't really done any history other than the indians and the aztec (which is pretty sad). I could swear I've heard about the Peterloo Massacre before...

To cut a long story short :

In 1819, many people gather in St Peters Field to discuss how they wanted changed to workers rights and the availity to vote for MP's

Unfortunately the local militia (part-time soldiers) got a trifle carried away in keeping order (probably most were drunk anyway), and started hacking people left, right and centre.

11 people died, 400/500 were wounded (for more details see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peterloo)

I do recommend the Horrible History series of books for learning about History (mostly English, but some books detail Aztecs, Egyptian, Greek, and, for Welsh people, Celts).

As some wise person said (could have been me) : You only know where your going, when you've seen where you've been.

Thanks for the link, do you know if they're going to have this on Discovery channel (they do have that in England don't they?)? It doesn't really seem to me like it should be on Discovery channel but it would be pretty interesting if they did have it on sometime.

... but seriously. For us too lazy to go to google and type in "what is thanks giving", what is thanks giving? I mean, to most Brits, xmas is a time to get fat and have presents, but there's a deeper meaning .... Jesus (yes, a vague smattering of brits still believe in Jesus). What about thanks giving? When all the fat turkey and empty bottles of single malt are polished off, whats the real reason?

When the puritan pilgrims first settled here (specifically, the ones in Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts), they had a pretty crappy time since they landed right before winter in 1620. The next season some Indians come and help them out (this is where Squanto and Massasoit come into the story), showing them all the skills they need to make food and shelter in their new home. In the fall (November maybe? I don't know, I'm recalling this from elementary school) the pilgrims and Indians have a huge feast to represent their mutual gratitude for having made new friends, and the pilgrims especially have gratitude for the Indians that came and helped them out. It's literally "thanks giving" where you recall all the sentimental stuff that you are grateful for. That's why it's a family shindig, you're grateful for your family.

Well then why do Canadians celebrate it too? And why is ours in October?

I guess I could look it up.

Quote: "Canadians trace the holiday to a feast held by Martin Frobisher in Newfoundland in 1578.

The first Thanksgiving Day in Canada after Confederation was observed on April 5, 1872 to celebrate the recovery of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) from a serious illness. Official records do not show that Thanksgiving was observed again until the year when parliament declared Thanksgiving to be an annual national holiday to give thanks and ask for blessings for an abundant harvest. Every year prior to 1957, parliament proclaimed the date annually, resulting in the date being different annually. In 1957, it was proclaimed by the Government of Canada that Thanksgiving for an abundant harvest was to be observed on the second Monday in October for every year thereafter. Thanksgiving in Ontario is a public holiday, which means most stores and business are closed for the day. Only designated tourist areas (e.g. downtown Toronto - Eaton Center) are allowed to conduct business with shorter business hours."
