Got some spam with an attached file, claiming to be from darkbasic.com. If you look at the "To:" address, it's not even my email address. I think somebody doesn't fully understand what the spoofing telnet commands do. Looks like they meant to type SMTP or something, like it was suppose to be there in the console.

As a side note, there's currently a security problem with all OS's(i think) A javascript hole that lets somebody install on your computer simply by visiting a website. hence why i didn't click the link in the email. who knows where i'd be redirected to.

Get ready for an assault of insults coming to defend TGC from any such claim of spam.

I wasn't stating that TGC was spamming, because I seriously doubt this email is from them. The title just grabs attention.

yea i know but Ive just noticed that anytime something even the slightest bit negative is posted about TGC the mod squad is on top of it acting like freedom of speech does not exist anymore

Infact ill probably be harassed and banned now for this!

Fixxer - What in the 9 hells are you talking about?

Phaelax - I honestly think these spam emails randomly choose popular domain names for the addresses to make them seem more legit.

Isn't TGC's new e-mail domain thegamecreators.com already or something?

Interesting. We've not used that domain name for years now, but we do still own it. Could someone post the full message headers please, screen shots of the To: doesn't show anything useful I'm afraid.

I'm more interested in the mail server responsible for delivering the messages to them, which while it can be faked, often isn't.

Last topic I read about some one complaining about TGC, about 3 or 4 mods ganged up on him with a few insults and then banned him and said maybe he will learn is lesson after a break.

He wasnt breaking anyrules, just expressing his opinion in a clean appropriate manner. This was accusing TGC of sending spam so I figured it might happen again. Luckily it didnt

The two were different - Phaelex recognises that the from address is probably/is spoofed.

Link?

One of the main problems is free email systems. Even Gmail is susceptible if you have a generic username.

@ Fixxer: if it`s the person I`m thinking of they accused TGC of spamming them and using spyware/installing virii, a stupid and patently untrue claim and the person concerned just wouldn`t shut up even when it was explained by several people that he most likley only had himself to blame (seeing as so many people use this forum with no problems as well), personaly I think some people need to be forced to take a IQ test before they are allowed near a PC or the net

generaly, this forum seems to be favoured by spambots, maybe someone could set up some spurious addys for them to trawl with a spare PC feeding the spam to Spam Asassin or something, I once or twice put up an un-obfusicated mail adresse in a thread and got spam identifiable as originating from here in under 2 days, maybe some disgruntled ex newb like zeccinie14 (he of "books?, don`t need books, books is stupid" fame) points bot`s this way deliberatly or something.

@ Lucas W and Phaelex - those emails are all new versions of the SOBER virus. You cn find information here: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=137072&cid=16001

I've received about 15 of these emails

Part of solving the problem is actually noticing that the problem is there in the first place

According to Symantec Security Response the mass mailing worm Sober variant X has been successfully propagating across the web at an extremely fast pace.

I've gotten several of the emails now, all identical from different origins. Mainly computer related websites: delphi3d, Sun, Yahoo, msn, apple, wired, among others. Thanks for the heads up Dodo. My AV expired several months back, so I haven't been able to update my definitions. Norton is twice the price now than when I last bought it.

Actually, the deletion was a mistake. A mod accidentally hit delete.

No, it wasn't me.

That virus scanner found from the link Dodo posted didn't work. Scanned forever and never found anything. I got about 80 emails from this sitting in my junk mail box.

@phaelex - if you haven't opened the file then the virus won't have installed itself, therfore AVG won't detect it. This means your not infected

Also, if your using hotmail then the emails aren't stored on your computer...

After running that scanner, even though it didn't notify me of finding anything, I'm wondering if it just removes the virii automatically? Because prior to running it, I was getting 30 emails a day with the same message appearing to be caused by that Sober virus. I haven't gotten anymore since then.
