Once again (yeah, I don't post that much, only when I need help, but I read the forums often ) I need your help. Maybe it's a bit of a geeky topic, but well... I would like to automate some things here, not the whole house or something, just things like the lights. Not because I'm such a lazy person, but just for fun. What I would like to do is programming the whole software part in Delphi. I think I would be able to handle that part. What I want to ask to you guys is, does anyone know what kind of 'output-hardware'(don't know how it's called in English) I should buy? It would be nice too if you could direct me to a website with more information on this specific topic. Thanks in advance for your help!

if you type "computer home automation" into google then all different kinds of links appear on your screen like this

http://www.sseserver.net/Computers/Home_Automation/Products_and_Manufacturers.aspx

if you click on em then things happen, like information appears on your monitor, people try to sell you home automation products, links to enthusiast DIY websites happen etc you get the idea

Hehe, thanks for your reply But I have already searched on google What I would like to know is, information especially to do the automating process myself. So somekind of 'hardware' which I can call from a programming language. Connected to a serial port or something

Ive been developing a system on and off for some time now to allow control of my music system from any room in the house. I found the picaxe series of ics very easy to get into as the programming is based on basic and you can reprogram them several thousand times. These chips will allow you to output certain conditions when given certain inputs and they support serial transfer although I have found that I have to boost the signal with a max232 chip.
heres the address for the picaxe, if anything it will give you a good understanding of what can be achieved

http://www.linuxha.com/athome/index.html#Software

v informative imo, looks easy enough.

[edit] in fact thinking about it you could use the guts from a force feedback joystick and a couple of a/d converters, the buttons could be wired to supply digital input, the analogue parts for things like volume settings and the force feedback could be used to send out a couple of eight or 16 bit digital on/off signal buses, it would be pretty simple to convert and you could do all the control software from darkbasic using the force feedback and joystick commands.
