I thought my luck couldn't get any worse, but it seems it can this month. Today my Maxtor 80GB HDD failed.

When Windows is booting, you can hear the motor clunking, as if it's slipping/losing grip. Windows does eventually boot up and it seems to read data fine. Maxtor's site says it has an average seek time 9.3ms and SMART is reporting the spin up time of .... 17983ms.

So, what brands to people recommend? I can't say I'll be going for Maxtor again, unless someone has a good reason - This HDD is only 3 months old and it's already useless. My last HDD was a Maxtor and it only lasted 4 years.

I've had all brands fail on me, so I cant really recommend any.

Western Digital seem okay though.

I like Western Digital... back in the day they were by far the best but it's been so long since I've bought one I wasn't sure any more.

I've just called a shop in town and they'll sell me a 160GB WD for £60 - a little expensive but at least I can get one on a Sunday. Incidentally, My trusty backup drive is a Western Digital 40GB (acquired from a previous employer) and it's outlived 2 hard disks now.

i've only ever used maxtor but i've heard western digital and seagate are good

Hello,

I had 2 disk crushes this year. Both were Maxtor. I now use a Hitachi disks and till now I have no problems with them. Before I used to use WD. No problems with them at all. Whatewer you buy, do not buy Maxtor, I sure wont buy them never again.

Have a nice day,

Tomaz

Just spent the entire day copying over stuff from my Maxtor to my old Western Digital, scrutinising each possible file and its worth Anyway, just before I decommisioned the Maxtor, I thought it would be handy to get the official verdict on what went wrong. So I downloaded Maxtor's testing tool, and plugged it in as the only drive. I couldn't help but notice that the clicking problem had gone ...

Confused, I plugged the WD drive in and the clicking started! I've gone and bloody backed up my entire machine onto a dodgy HDD ...

I'll let you know how it turns out

As Lloyd Bridges once said, looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

I've had 2 10k WD SATA Raptors hooked up in a RAID 0 array. Damn speedy and hasn't gone wrong yet. Bit expensive per gb though.

Cheers

I think I've gotten everything back off the old WD, so it's all good. I think I'll return the 200GB SATA drive I bought. Sad, I know, but given my current situation, I'm sure you'll understand why I could do with the £75 rather than an extra 200GB of storage

I always use Western Digital. Very reliable, great tools and support on their web site. I'm not gonna say I never had a WD go boom on me, I have, but very rarely. In my experience Maxtor and Seagate are somewhat less reiable than wd's.

good luck

In my experience, Maxtor and WD are teh best.

My brother put his old 40gb hard drive in his XBox when he modded it, and by then it was over 3years old, now it's over 4 years old, it has a high pitched sound when running, but other than that, it's find.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either Maxtor or WD, unless you buy a defective drive, and there is no avoiding that

All the hard drives (4 I think) that failed on me were Maxtors. I've had a Seagate go a bit potty on me once, but it was ok after a couple of days (never went wrong again). The rest were all WD and worked great.

Saying that, I have a 300Gb external Maxtor drive and it works fine. Don't use it as much as the internal ones, sure, but so far so good (about 6 months).

Since I've put in extra fans in my sisters machine (where the drives were failing every 3 months or so), I haven't had a problem yet - assuming the fans are actually helping...

It might be worth getting extra ones...

yeah! overheating was the problem with this machine once I added a extra HD, mini ATX cases are too small for power use, go for the full size ATX cases or (like me) add fans, also note that those HD racks that place a HD right up next to the next drive are a NO!-NO!, in that configuration even with the extra fans the HD`s on this machine overheated in under ten minutes, no air can get between them, solved it by moving the extra HD to the (unused) floppy drive bay, never had a seconds trouble since then it`s now run three years with no problems.

I also had two ATI video cards fail in the same machine, it has this silent cooling system and TBH I think it`s not up to scratch, just adding a bigger cooler to the GFX card solved that problem, I think that makers just don`t add enough cooling to modern PC`s most of the problems you hear about sound like hardware running too hot for too long, just because your HD can run for a long time at 100deg/C doesn`t mean it`s doing it any good, ANY hd will fail if abused, and I notice the modern high capacity drives tend to run a lot hotter than my older 20gig ones, you can even get heatsinks for HD`s nowdays, that should tell you something, as with all electronic stuff, the cooler it runs, the longer it will last, just don`t expect the makers to pay for extra fans and wiring/installation/heatsinks, they will supply the least they can get away with, why not? makes them more money.

Is a Troll actualy a Chav who`s on the net?, are Chavs capable of using the net? if they are, what idiot trained em?

it's funny because my brother swears by Maxtor, and says that all his WD drives have crashed on him... I have never had a problem with either.

reading reviews on the internet, I read that Maxtor has better Warrientees and don't cost as much, but are a bit louder. But last I checked was about 5 months ago... so things might have changed with the quality of both Maxtor and WD

Yep. Just seems to happen more (well only so far, but we are taking quite a few years and PCs here) with Maxtors for me. Both at home and at work (they don't use them any more at work apparently).

Quite an interesting discussion if you ask me. Everyone immediately centered around the big 3 - Seagate, Western Digital and Maxtor. It's useful to know that most other people are prepared to spend the £10 extra on a well known brand too.

Also, we can all pretty much agree that there isn't a "safe" brand - every manufacturer has a certain percentage of poor disks which die well before the projected MTTF. However, it looks like certain manufacturers have higher percentages than others...

Thanks everyone. I've learnt something today.

When I upgrade my hdd, I use the older drive for the OS and the newer one for storage. I'd rather lose the OS that I can install again, rather than lose years of... downloads... and stuff ^_^ I put a lot of trust in my 2 Seagates though.

404 on that link. o_O

I got a Maxtor drive a few months ago. After a few minutes passed I noticed it had gotten over 80°C. I then put a fan in front of it, suspended it (rather than putting it right over the other disk) and it's been running fine since.
Before this I had a seagate drive that started making noise and messing up stuff. My other seagate HD has been running well for over 7 years or so.

Really? Try it again. Working at the minute. Basically Seagate look like they have bought Maxtor. Looks like they are taking the Seagate name, and the full stop from Maxtor. So will be called Seagate.

What do you mean, "try it again"? I've used those disks every day since I got them.
Except this one time when I went on vacations to the beach... what a boring place, I don't know why anyone would go there. There isn't any power for me to plug my computer in, let alone web access. Just sand. Horrid place that...

The link. Try the link again. Should take you to a gadget blog, where if you scroll down you see the Maxtor no more story.
