About a month ago I got a letter that was from www.poetryamerica.com, they wanted to publish my poem "My Final Goodbye". I thought that was pretty cool.

Today I got another letter, this time from www.poetry.com. They informed me that my poem "Because We Were One" is a semi-finalist in their December Compo, and that it is going to be in their book set to come out in winter of 06.

check my poems out at my website (link in sigi)

Real nice pieces The Real 87

Just a word of warning though, both sites have a reputation for being involved in quite well known publishing scams (for want of a better word).

eg. http://www.zyworld.com/alanjulia/Alan/vanitypublish.htm

I'd recommend you have a quick search on the net for more info....and obviously never part with any money.

Hopefully I'm wrong but I thought I'd better warn you.

Still great work though.

Yeah, I've actually been a "semi-finalist" and "published" by poetry.com. They do not print your poem in their book unless you buy it, and even then you'll be lucky to get in there, because of the huge number of poets they are scamming daily.

My older sister was really into poetry a while ago. She got pulled into something like this and was really excited about the idea of winning... it was basically just a big scam. Avoid.

Had a good browse of the net and it does appear that those poetry sites are one big scam of the highest order and like fog and jimmy pointed out, they only print and sell the books to poets who pay for one! There are hundreds of horror stories. Stay well clear.

My wife just got published from poetry.com, for the second year in a row. And guess what, on both books for the two years, she was awarded "Honorary Poet", and they printed her poem on the very first page! What an honor!

Or what a scam!

They make people who pay believe that they are just the best, and they even custom make the books so that their poems appear on page one! What a scam!!!

Yeah Tobias, it is pretty awful. They do a pretty good job at making the poets feel extra special, which makes it hard for those who know the truth to tell said poet.

Years ago, I submitted a poem to poetry.com. Everything was cool, I was excited, then they declared me a "winner" and sent my "formatted" poem to me. I was disgusted. About the same time, a friend of mine did someting similar. It was a hard cover book filled with 3000 poems, all SUPER tiny. Worthless. I dropped it then.

The scam is not to take your money, directly anyway. The scam is to publish as many individual authors in one book and have each one buy the overpriced book. If you were really getting published, they'd give you a copy. There is not a real commercial market for amateur poets, good or not.

There is an amazing satisfaction and excitement in being published. However, poetry companies like this one are just in it to make money. It's a spin on the vanity press. Look at the title and cover of the book. It has not a thing to do with the poetry inside.

Just keep writing. Your day will come.
