I've been having problems accessing the internet via my LAN (going through an NAT gateway). I've used a program called netfixer, to analyse the problem.

The fault it logs constantly is

Quote: ""[error] :: 10:12:00am 10/12/05 -- VPN protocols on""

I know VPN's are enabled on my firewall, and could possibly be causing the issue the pogram keeps saying, but what the heck are VPN protocol's? I would turn them off, but I have no idea what they do, so I'm still quite hesitant to do what the proggy says.

Any ideas?

I would say, disable it, unless the computer is also for use in some buissness that is networked with other computers.
Sorry for my horrible grammar and spelling.

Yes benjamin, I seem to of some what neglected google on my search for a definition. Thanks for the link

Its a great explanation of how it works, but I need a bit more of an idea of whether it needs to be on or not I'm simply running a
home network with internet access through a single ICS/NAT gateway.

[Thanks Bush baby, but I want a couple more opinions to be sure ]

Turn it off and see if it works. (I've got the same set up myself, and I haven't had any problems at all, apart from the stupid wireless connection babooming itself every two hours. Gonna get a router soon )

Btw, you're not using AOL or any propertiary dialler programs, are you?

Definately not.

I've turned VPN off for now. It doesn't seem to make any difference to my network problem, except now the fixer program doesn't say anything

Really not sure what VPN offers on a home LAN. It's really a technology for WANs (ya know, office to office sort of thing via the phone network). It's to simulate an always-on connection between two remote sites that use a public network. Whether it's used to connect to your service provider, I don't know, but I doubt it. I'd guess you could safely switch it off and it wouldn't be your problem.
