Hey,
Is there some way to save something as an icon from just a .jpg or .bmp? If so how? I want to make an icon for my game, but can't figure out how to save it as a .ico. I tried renaming the file with .ico at the end, but it doesnt work.

T'is not entirely free, but I'm sure there are some freeware editors out there somewhere

You can use gimp. Gimp is a free, and extremely powerful image manipulation program.

I forget the site URL, but if you search "GIMP" on google, it should be in the first 3 hits.

you can also use a simple proggy like GoldIcon, made just for editing and saving icons, works well cos it allows you to create icons easily and save em in the most common sizes (and its a very small download).

Windows: 32 bit extension/graphical shell for a 16bit patch to an 8bit OS originally coded for a 4bit CPU, written by a 2bit company that can't stand 1bit of competition, now available in 64bits.

If it's just for a few icons, try using this:

http://www.vbaccelerator.com/home/VB/Utilities/Alpha_Icon_Creator/article.asp

Works really well, minimalistic, tiny file size, no installer, no crap; And when you delete it, it's gone.

More of a wizard than anything else, completely free. Designed for & written in VB, but a compiled version is included and the final icons work with any programming language.

(Converts BMPs & allows you to choose the 'background colour' to use as transparent in the final ICO. It works, and it's got to be admired for that.)

16-colour PNGs pwn.

Technically, you can change the extension of bitmaps to *.ico and it is possible to use them as icons some of the time. These icons are necessarily compatible with all programs.
