Star Control,
It brings back so many memories, from over 10 years ago.
This is the game that me and my friends played for hours, and then we decided that one day, we were going to make a game like Star Con. And that's when I started being interested in Programming.
The first thing that we (me and my friend) did was open paint (on windows 3
), and draw a little game board, we made up rules, and we played the game by moving our 'characters' around the canvas, that quickly got boring. So we asked my older brother if there was a "game maker" or something we can make our game in (we were probably 6 or 7), he said yes, but it was REALLY REALLY hard (that's what you always tell little kids to get them to lose their attention on something)
Then when I was 8 or 9, I watched my brother making stuff within C. And thought 'COOL! I want to do stuff like that!', so he showed me QBasic. I got a book from the library on Qbasic and quickly started copying code from the book and thought I was so cool, even though I had no idea what I was doing
I soon lost interest in that, it was WAY too complicated for me
I went on in life, one day I was playing around on my brother's computer, and found he had a Zelda 1 clone on his computer called
Zelda Classic. But ZC wasn't an every day clone of zelda, you could make your own Zelda 1 quests, and even change the sprites to whatever you want! AWESOME.
I got WAY into that... I never finished a single project tho (imagine that
) I played with that all through middle school (i was 12-15 years old)
But that soon wasn't enough. i wanted to make a MARIO KART clone, could i do that with Zelda classic? not hardly.
So i searched for something I could use. I actually stumbled across "BlitzBasic", of course, I didn't know anything about programming, except for how to print words to the screen and ask people what their name is and what not.
I followed a few BB tutorials, started to make my Mario Kart clone, I (of course) started with the main menu and the help file
I soon lost interest with that.
First year of highschool (9th grade here) I took a QBasic class. I was so excited, but I had to wait until the 2nd semester for it.
It finally came around, and I cruised right through the class.
Throughout that year, I stumbled into a program called "The Game Maker", that was pretty cool, but I didn't like it very much, I wanted something I could make a 3D game in.
I found a program called DEV STUDIO 2 or something like that, I started to search for demos of it and stuff, and on one site, I found a program called "Dark Basic", after a week using the demo, I bought it off EBAY for $10
I went on in life, took a Java class 11th grade, C# class 12th grade. Moved on to DBP somewhere in there.
And here I am today... Looking for this game that sparked my imagination. I talked to my brother the other day, asked him if he had any of the many "Star Con" games, he said he did, but they didn't work on XP
I was bummed.
So I decided that I was going to make a SC2 clone, but I needed screenshots and stuff, so I started to search. And to my luck, I found, what I thought at first was a clone of SC2, but it turned out, they released the SC2 source and a group of people started to port it to XP.
I downloaded it, and it WORKED! I started to play it, and all these memories come flooding in
It's so weird to think that such a small game got me to where I am now
I'm still thinking about making a 3d clone of this game sometime
, but now, i must play
the freaking best game ever made
and as it turns out, I, of all my friends I had, am the only one to stick with programming. One friend is going into some computer tech field tho. But all my friends from elementary and middle school, I'm the only 'true' nerd
anyway, sorry to bore you guys
[edit] HOLY CRAP, did i write all of that? heh, i'm starting to be like raven!
