pick a theme you like: if you like the medieval age make a game to that theme. pick a style of game: Battle stragedy, fps, role playing, etc. then make a story: rp=good guys losing till your character come then good wins, good guys kill bad guys then good guys turn bad and people rebel against them(star wars story) , etc.
but if you want something to start off with do a game about dark elves who are going to make seige with high elves. hope this helps.

If you don't particularly like the idea of pong - how about something like snake?

Never jump in with the best game the world has ever seen (my sig explains all)

and don't take any notice of this "best" programmer, right now, he seems to be a right mean (something) - if you want to do/try something new - then do it... most of the users are happy to assist people like yourself.

...maybe one day I'll finish a project

You will find it easier to finish a game if you actually want to play it. Just pick a game that you want to play.

Actually, I don't know if I'd suggest that. My favorite games are MMORPG

If you have some experience in coding, you might want to try an fps. They're not hard to code, only the bullets can be confusing in the beginning.

If you are still not in a state of programming a FPS-game, you can try a 2D-shooter, Memory game, A small rpg-engine(keep very basic) or maybe you can even try to design a small puzzle game.

I find the 3D boned animated modelling to be the hardest part of games. I would stick with 2d at first.

Well, you don't need to use animated models. You could start with just boxes (though they don't look nice...)

What I meant was that you don't need alot of programming skills to code it.

Isn't 3D-models done outside DB?

I agree. Check out Battlefield 2: http://www.ea.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/home.jsp

Or the expansion pack: http://www.ea.com/official/battlefield/specialforces/us/home.jsp

There is a good example of one.

nope. in fact, i reccomend FPS as a first game, as they are much easier to code then other games. just my 2 cents.
