Hi all,

Found this nice site the other day, is supposed to let you play loads of retro console games directly in your browser (megadrive, snes, pc-engine, etc) but the Java applet never works for me. Does it work for anyone else?

http://www.game-oldies.com/?m=list

Just click a screen shot to load the game (page picks random games on each load) I tried in Firefox 1.5 and Safari.

Cheers,

Rich

Works fine. Using IE (I'm at work).

Played centipede - and I sucked at it. Haven't played that since I was 6!

Well, with centipede, it was arrowkeys and x,c,v,b. b seemed to be the select button.
Not sure if that works with the other games though.

Worked fine in Firefox 1 and IE6 but only after I downloaded the sun java runtime system. I was using old microsoft java on IE as I had a work application that needed it.

I found that some games worked perfectly and some only got as far as showing the game logo and some did not start at all.

Some good games on there.

Works for me, B button was start on Zero Wing. Cool site, although the game I tried was a little slow. Gave me my retro fix for today at least.

I always get more fun out of emulated games, got all the bits I need for my MAME cabinet except the joysticks - can't wait to get that built, but damn those X-Arcade beauties are expensive!, do X-Arcade have a January sale...

EDIT:
Man alive! - $30 for all the stuff I need!

I was gonna buy a full twin joystick thing, they're like £100 - this is much betterer!.

Rick - the site works fine for me in Firefox...

VanB - Yeah but how are you going to get the buttons and sticks to respond as key presses? Hardwiring it yourself is a nightmare (not only is it complicated, but the sheer amount of wires is ridiculous, 2 for every microswitch, thats one on every button (prefereably you want at least 12 buttons AND 2 starts, 2 coins, and a menu/esc button) and 4 on every joystick!

An IPAC is an easier solution, but they'll cost u at least 30 quid, plus all the wires etc. There are some people who sell homemade pre wired kits ready to solder/clip onto your microswitches, but again, its 30 odd quid and you still have the ightmare of one wire being on backwards and the whole lot doesn't work

I've made lots of Mame cabinets, and buying separate components IS cheaper, but only just - one time i paid the extra 20 quid for an x arcade and just ripped it appart to save myself the headache of wiring it all

A cheap and good alternative is to get one of the dreamcast, psx or xbox arcade sticks made by Sega or Namco with genuine arcade parts second hand on ebay - they are much easier to hack, or even get a usb converter for a tenner

They require Java 1.5, which is a significant change from 1.4.2, even to get the thing on it's feet.

I'll just stick to my 128-in-one retro TV game

Hehe, my brother is a master solderer, he repairs motherboards for a living - The wiring should'nt be too much of a headache anyway - I have an old keyboard that uses soldered-in keys, as long as the response time is good there should'nt be a problem.

I've made joysticks and stripped down cabinets before, so I'm not too concearned - but even if it does'nt work, I'm only spending £20, I could still get a pre-built joystick if things go pear-shaped. My original intention was to get an old cabinet and strip it out, but we'd rather build a custom one, like 3/4 height to make sitting playing more comfortable. I'm making a custom front end for it and everything .

The issue isn't my version of Java - it's that it doesn't work on a Mac. So much for Java being 'cross platform'

Van-B,

Try the following german site, they have
http://www.arcadeshop.de/index.php?cPath=24_73&sort=2a&page=2

Single high-qualitiy 4/8-way joystick as used in X-Arcade controller boards. Withstands circa 1,000,000 moves. Connection breadth: 4.8 mm. Suitable for DIY or as replacement.

13.75 Euro

Yeah, that's what I was looking at, check the site I mentioned - right at the bottom I can get a full set of buttons and 2 sticks for £20 .

I must say I prefer the look of those joysticks on the German site though.

sounds like fun Van - I have made a few cabinets myself, and also stripped out a knackered orignal Atari 1979 Asteroids machine which is currently sat in my hallway playing NeoGeo games
