I'm looking on Ebay for an original NES. I remember there was also a top-loading version released years later. But after searching, I've found several different versions, some looking like a small sega. Other's called an FC Nintendo that claims to play NES games. But I thought the FamiCom(FC) was something totally different. Many people are trying to get $80 for the original NES version. I'm not paying that. But I don't wanna buy a knock-off that won't play the original games.

I mean, what the heck is this thing?

I thought the famicom was a nintendo product, just a re-release of the nes in america, re-named cause they didn't want the jap name??

The Famicom (Family-Computer) is just the Japanese version of the NES. Identical hardware and software to the NES, but in different plastic casing.

The American and European versions were the NES ("Nintendo Entertainment System" and looked exactly the same as each other but entirely different casing to the FAMICOM.

At the very end of its life there was a top loading one that looked a bit like a snes, that was only released in America.

The ONLY other offical NES sytem that I know of is the Arcade machine "Play Choice 10"

There are LOADS of clone NES systems that look different, most of them being Famicoms (ie only play JAP games) or come with loads of game ROMS built in (ie the 128-in-one style "arcade" joypads that plug into your tv you get at markets. These are illegal. And Toys-R-Us sell them. and they are ILLEGAL. and SOLD IN TOYS R US. (Sorry but that annoys me.)

An unboxed NES system costs around 25 pounds on ebay, a boxed one can reach 50-60 for the normal packs, or 100 for the one that came with a robot. The local second hand shops near me sell them for around those prices too. The games are worth 3-10 pounds mostly although there are some VERY rare ones which collectors go nuts for.

Megaton - Wow nice, 3 of the best games

I'm quite happy with my SNES emulator. Everything works perfectly. I play Donkey Kong Country with my wife.

And I've seen one that takes batteries and plugs into the TV and comes loaded with NES games for fairly cheap. I think the original hardware is too unreliable to really invest much in.

Yes the front loading NES systems are quite unreliable, but also very easy to clean & fix. The top loading systems are rock solid and never die

Megaton - I recently sold a PAL verion of Castlevania without instructions and far from mint but in the box, it got 25quid!

Well, by "boxed" I meant still in the original wrapping, unopened. That's probably why it was worth so much.

p.s What's PAL?

Quote: "PAL?"

PAL is the colour video standard in europe/some parts of aisa.

PAL = Europe/Asia
NTSC = America etc.

PAL won't work on NTSC systems, and NTSC won't work on PAL systems (without conversion etc.)

This applies to video games, DVD's, VHS's etc etc...

NTSC has 527 lines (resolution) at 30fps, and PAL has 499 lines at 24.3fps (I think. Correct me if I'm wrong. I may be getting confused with my cine animation camera here ... )

yes I realsied it was probably mint, I mean I was surprised that my relatively por copy got 25 pounds, I was expecing 5-10

PAL is the horrible UK standard which meant that we used to get games thatwere 17.5% slower and had ugly top and bottom borders... thankfully most games don't get this anymore thanks to 60hz mode

lol thats great! And yeah UK 80s video gaming sucked But ten i chiped my Master System and NES and had a 60hz switch put on them. That pwned

[edit] Users in Canada or the States probably remember the Master System as sucking. Thats because in those territories it died a death before the good games came out Over here, UK and European delevlopers arried on making games for it into the mid 90s and many of them rocked

Wouldn't know anything about that - I grew up in Israel so we got all the coolest video-games like the Europe folks.

NES rocks, I still own my original from 1985 with a ton of games. I also have this 1000 in 1 type device that plays various NES games. The day I found my PSP was hackable I ended up putting a NES emulator on it, and that's about all I play on that thing now. It'll still be nice if someone in my family buys me more games for it, being that they are still expensive.
