My original idea was to release this as a 'Christmas Present' to the DB community - seeing as most of you will have a bit of free time to make use of it over the next few weeks.

But, as is usually the case, I didn't get to finish it in time!

I'm off to the UK in a couple of days for Christmas and may not get time to finish it completely this side of Christmas.

So, I'm just tidying it up a little and will post a download tomorrow which although won't be the finished version, should be OK to have a play with.

I know DBPro's 2D commands are not very fast, but although it runs OK on my machine, I'd like to know what are the lowest computer specs it runs on before it gets too slow to use.

Hey TDK

I've seen this around, and I must say, it looks quite usefull, I have always wanted to make games with sideways scrolling, but I just couldn't do it using paint The way you've set this out looks great, and a fantastic way of making your sprites, it looks great, I just hope it runs ok on my computer, it is disgustingly slow with 2D commands.

Nice work

[edit]

I would recommend cutting down alot on 2D commands that aren't sprites, such as the buttons, because they look very DBPro-ish (from the picture anyway), they don't look very fast..

Finally something like this. I saw a program similar to this on some German site, but it was 25 dollars and didn't have the nice animation features.

SpriteEdit demo download:

http://www.computechtenerife.com/spriteedit.rar (580K)

PLEASE read the small readme document in the rar file before trying to use the program. This demo has limited functionality at the moment and this doc briefly explains things you need to know.

Also, please don't waste your time reporting things that don't work - the chances are that I know about them already!

What I would like to know is the specs of your machine - but ONLY if the program is too slow to be usable. This is so I know what minimum requirements to state for it. (DB's 2D commands are very slow, so it's unlikely I will be able to speed up the program to any great extent).

Yeah this isn't a bug report, but everytime I run any DBC application or game it goes into some weird resolution where the screen is about 15 pixels too high and a little too wide for the screen. I think it might be my monitors fault, but anyone have any ideas how to fix it(besides "get a new monitor")

Anyway the app runs smoothly on:

Intel 2.4 GHz
Nvidia GeForce 440

that's everything important I guess

SpriteEdit was written in DBPro, so it can't be that.

But, someone else has reported GFX corruption on a slower machine and it just dawned on me that it could be to do with the fact that it runs in 800x600x32 screen mode.

This might be what was causing the problem on older machines, so I just recompiled it in 800x600x16. It might solve your problem too.

(Please use download link in previous post again).

TDK,

Awesome app. I've always wanted to write something in 2D, I've just never figured out how to animate sprites!

I have one question regarding SpriteEdit though:

How do I save the sprites as image grids? I have read the "ReadMe!", but when I Save Sprite as Animation Image, it just saves one black bitmap for every frame in my animation(and I have remembered to start a new project first! ).

That didn't help. I always run stuff in 1024x768 and I never have any problems so do you think It might need to run in 1024x768? That would be a lot to change though since you built everything in 800x600. I used to not have this problem, but I got this monitor and ever since then stuff like this has happened, so I doubt it's the card.

Antidote:

OK, I've made it run in 800x600 windowed mode, so that should solve the problem for you. (Same filename, same link above).

klu 007:

When you have all your frames running across the bottom of the screen and it animates correctly, use Save Project. Then, simply click on 'Save Sprites As Animation Image'.

When you use Save Project, if the project was called 'Fred' it saves each frame as Fred001.bmp, Fred002.bmp, Fred003.bmp and so on, along with a Fred.Spr file.

When you use Save Sprites As Animation Image, it creates another image (also in the Fred project folder) called Fred.bmp which should contain all the images on a grid.

This works fine for me on all the machines I've tested it on.

Anyone else not able to save properly?

I just found out it's been working all the time.
I opened up one of the files in Paint, and I found out that it was just The Gimp that didn't show the image as it should... Sorry for the inconvenience!

Much better. I like apps in windows anyway. Feels more proffessional and easier access to other open programs.

Not sure I understand the question. You don't have to use Memblocks to edit images...

Wow TDK looks awesome!

For the monitor thing, try ,essing with the settings on your monitor. My HPvs17 monitor use to do that but I messed with the settings a little and it started to work. If it has an auto adjuster, try that a few times. (if you already got it working, then just ignore this bit of info).

I've just uploaded possibly the last demo version. The next upload will probably be the finished version, though it doesn't seem to like running on my laptop so that may not be until I return from the UK after Christmas.

This version has had a few bugs in the New Project option fixed and I've now added the code for Load Image.

The Load Image option is intended for you to load single images to apply to your animation. The idea is that you can build up animations from collections of individual images.

For example, if your graphics software will load an animated GIF and save them as a series of BMP files, this option will let you load them into SpriteEdit and re-build the animation.

Important Note: As the SpriteEdit demo only uses 64x64 pixel sprites, any images you load which are bigger than this will be cropped from the top left corner!

When loaded they appear in the 'actual sprite size' box. Simply drag them to the film reel and save the project when done.

Say TDK, I've seen a similar interface in the screens from MatEdit Pro. Do you have some kind of interface system?

Looks good. Hopefully you'll finish it...unlike the particle program. I was looking forward to that. Either way, I have DB PRO now, so I couldn't use it anyways.
