If you don't want to read, I'll give you the gist of it.

They are making a game where you lift boxes, which mothers hope to replace violent games with, and think its an amazing idea, and will not have a bad influence what so other (Other than the side effects that everyone will want to stack boxes for a living afterwards)

Quote: ""No kid in the world could possibly get anything out of it. There's no reason why the video-game industry shouldn't be making a lot more games like this.""

Well firstly it would be boring, and kids like to play fun games.

Secondly, why are they obsessed with stopping these violent games that aren't made for the eyes of children, what I say is that is bad parenting, also, I can see why that it can give the bad influence, but if you are going to give your kids stuff when they are underaged, then they need to be managed so they don't do the wrong thing, I mean my parents did it, I gre up with Stephen Kings movies, a lot of action/violence movies, mostly horror, listened to metal from the age of 9/10, I mean the first two metal bands I started listening two were Marilyn Manson and Metallica, and well according to people Manson's music is a bad influence, even on teenagers, also when it came to games, sure I started off with Sonic the hedgehog and monkey island, but when it came to playstations after Final Fantasy VII, I played GTA, and loved it from there on. So according to these bad mothers in denial, I should be a real hell raiser, who is constantly swears, practices satanic rituals (Heck I read the satanic bible 3/4 years a go, interesting book) and I should in theory be a sadist, but nope, I'm peaceful and sarcastic. Explain that stupid people

Oops I went off a bit lol

it`s just an Onion article, they are well known for sarcastic humour, at the end they have some parent complaining about it squashing ambition in children, it`s rather like...

http://adequacy.org/public/stories/2001.12.2.42056.2147.html

they are funny, but thankfully they aren`t real (or if they are then the parent in that linked article is the realy scarey thing ).

What is this teaches kids to stack body parts to fit in a car-trunck or to stack a wall of bricks to hide bodies?!?!?

BAD influence. BAaaaaad.

Know what's a bad influence? School.
Biology teaches what parts of the body are more delicate, therefore better for taking a jab at. That and they cut open small animals.
Math brings endless frustration to kids' minds, turning them into violent psychopaths.
Physics teaches all the information necessary for home-made bombs.
I propose a reform in our educational systems with safer subjects, such as "Gaming 101".

I hate to be politically correct, so I won't....

Quote: " Yeah. I learned much more from Sonic then I ever did from Psycology."

Know watcha mean, my psychology teacher is too bothered in dating our head of year, she missed a lesson because they had an arguement Plus, SONIC RULES!!!

And well, everything can be interpreted as a bad influences, which is why these mothers make me laugh so much, its like words being sexual, any one can turn any word into something sexual (other than soup according to someone i know...) as you can turn anything to appear as a bad influence except card board boxes
So I'll quote Kim Chong Il

well isnt the real reason that parents are no way near as strict as they used to? same for schools you keep hearing about they used to use the cane in schools in victorian times and you wonder why they were more obediant? i find blaming computer games is totally stupid its just the latest thing for parents to blame due to there bad parenting. i think whats fun about games like the gta series is that they allow you to do things that you would almost never be allowed to do in real life and having good ai and things makes it seem all the more real, and the people who copy these games would probably have done it anyway since they were so screwed up to begin with.

and with all the new crazy ammount of political correctness and everyoone expecting everyone to act in a totally oderly fasion, breaking the boundaries of that are fun right? its just some people go way to far and just become a nusence.

if everyone in the world worked in a nice orderly fasion never breaking any rules/laws imagine what a boring world we would be living in.

Yeah, a completely orderly and clockwork-like world. Horrible...

Nah, but seriously, I agree. Games are the latest thing for parents to blame. I dunno were I read this, but I agree with it anyway, it goes as follows:

Quote: "Parents no longer distinguish the line between their children no longer talking with them because they are on the computer, and their children no longer talking with them. Parents automatically think that their children are being anti-social if they are on the computer. They do not take into account, nor do they care about MSN, ICQ, Online forums and the like. They automatically think that their children are being antisocial! Recent studies at the university of Cambridge suggest that..."

And it goes off. But you have to agree with the facts.

(Hello hello, woohoo what do you know im back)

Ok ok, this game is obviously still to contraversial, i mean think about it, they say it cuases no excitment whatso ever. But this is a dirty, dirty, lie! What if a child worries that at a moments notice his box will explode as it was filled with explosives? Or what if all of a sudden the charachter suffers from horrible back-breaking accident? Heres a mini game for you, make it to the social offices in time to get workmans comp! No what am i saying, to exciting. I know how bout a game that is just a white screen, with encourging text that says "your a winner" or "You can suceed at anything, except video games, which are a ticket to life in prison. So, my point in all this? I have no point, as something that has a point is sharp, which could lead to a stabbing motion, and could cuase injury or even, DEATH!

Me! thanks, I'll use it on him

@Black, I see how people are anti social on computers, I know from first hand, my sister is always on the bloody internet, she's addicted, she doesn't even watch a movie when the family sit down to watch one, she just sits the from when she gets back from her morning job until she goes to bed (well until I turn the modem off as it is in my room) about 12 o-clock. But not everyone is anti social with computers, like me for instance, I'd rather socialize they spend hours talking on MSN.

I would'nt mind seeing more games like that.

I mean one of my favourite games ever is Harvest Moon, about as laid back and chilled as any game could ever be - you run a little farm, growing veg and looking after your animals. My son loves it too, and it's not even like I bought it for him because it's a 'nice' game, I got it for myself then he pined for his own copy. There's plenty gameplay to be had outside the usual torrent of blood-thirsty FPS's.

I know that my son plays violent games like GTA:SA, but it's all a matter of balance, it's good to be able to vent frustration in a violent game, just like it's good to be able to chill out with a relaxed game like Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing, Monkeyball, driving games etc etc etc. If he wasn't into 'nice' games too then I'd be concearned.

well I think people should play games they enjoy, and yes a good balance is good, or extra parenting, as long as there is a barrier between what is real and game as well, which these bad mothers fail to see and blame it on the game companies. Which is why they make them an 18 game

And well Animal Crossing rules, and so does harvest moon (even though I only played the old 2D version )

I have no clue why people thing playing violent video-games is a way to "let out frustration". I always play in a relaxed and content mood whether I'm planting crops in Harvest Moon or running down the elderly in GTA.

I don't have some sort of guilty fantasy involving the deaths of hundreds of people that I innocently let out of my system while playing games. I just play for the heck of it.

It's just a game.

The violent videogame complaints made sense before ESRB was formed and the major chain stores didn't sell minors M rated games. Now that's all in place. And it's getting stricter too; I bought Diablo 2 at Best Buy when the limitations were supposedly in place, but I've tried to slip M rated games past twice since then at both Circuit City and Best Buy and failed both times.

The secret to Harvest Moon is to grow lots of different types of veg, and have tons of trees, like do lots of fishing up by the waterfall then use the money to buy tree seeds. Trees take about a game year to grow, but once they do, each harvest gives about 60 fruits, turn them into seeds, then sell those for like 450 bucks each (that's about 27,000 per tree per year). I have about 20 trees .

You should also try to get the Ruby Spice, that divides into 2 when cooking, so you can get 1 ruby spice and use it to make tons of food for eating, your dog, or selling.

Also, you can get a Cat (listening Megaton!), just be friends with the old woman and she'll give you a stray cat - the cat's don't do much in HM, just like normal cats really , the cat eats out of the dogs dish though. The whole point behind the doggie is to keep that mink Murray out of your food store, Murray cracks me up though, I always leave a lot of apples for him in there. If you keep food in your dogs dish, he stops Murray stealing your food.

man, i gotta be really lame, i actually think a game where you stack boxes would be pretty cool. Especially if you use newton physics, cause you could build some cool forts out of boxes then go and smash them down...

come on you guys like blockland! help me out here... who wants to help make a box stacking game? it can't be that hard....

Actually Wigget with ODE physics it would be very easy - Newton physics too, these plugins are very straightforward for boxes.

That's the thing though, physics engines are fun, like stacking up lots of stuff in HL2, or trying to get a load of bottles in a crate without it spilling - if you were able to manipulate the crates then I'd mess around with that more than the actual game .

You could even have special glue for sticking the boxes, prodding sticks - stuff like that - kiddie style building blocks would be ideal (arches, slopes, etc). Imagine 2 players fighting over building blocks to build a fort, then firing cannons at each other trying to destroy each others efforts .

yeah it does sound pretty easy to implement, and i mean come on the only good thing about hl2 death match is the grav gun and shovels/newspapers. so really who is interested in making a game where you stack up boxes to make forts??

Van-B --- what system are you referring to, and what version of HM? I'm thinking of It's a Wonderful Life for the NGC. I played it for about a week then quit because I still couldn't find enough food.

I will try it again--- I just wish the daily clock cycle was in real-time like Animal Crossing--- the HM clock seems to go too fast.

You can put the bottles in crates in HL2, but they'll often break when you move the crates around fast. The physics are good but not perfect.

Ah, damn, that was a great game
