I am looking to buy a new video card. I went to newegg and it appears that most of the cards on there are Pci express 16. I have an agp motherboard. Would it be worth my while to switch to a new board and go with the pci express cards. Or should I just stick with the AGP cards. The price isnt a big deal. I just want to buy the best card so I need to know what Is the better of the two cards.

pci express is the new bad boy in the market place.
agp is being fazed out slowly.

some tricks about buying technology, to make it work for you.

buy into technology on the level you can afford, or smart rent the hardware gaining tax returns.

buy into technology when the price hits a sweet spot. check the market every 6 weeks and watch something reduce in price.

buy into the latest technology when your guaranteed a return in profit, eg work from the computer or hardware.

eg: a 9800 pro ATI 256 AGP8x on pricewatch.com is ample enough for my video editing suite but later i will buy PCIX when its a little cheaper and the process starts to slow down. btw its like $183 at the moment.

a x800 pro ATI 256 PCIX is only $179 or so.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Dunno about that. Some of the online shops have like no AGPs left. Or just one (typically a very expensive 6800). Nothing above X800 or 6800 though.

I've noticed that AGP Mobos and cards cost $10-$20 MORE than the PCIEx16...

Yep, AGP is now getting old and the newest video cards are not AGP...you'll have to get PCI Express sooner or later cuz thats the future of video cards. Also, AGP mobos usually have AMD socket 754 (in AMD's case, dunno bout Intel) which limits your choice of CPUs and features.

Then theres no question really. PCI-E simply stomps all over, then laughs at, anything AGP. Get a good pci-e mobo and a fat nvdida7800 ultra and youre set

Im running a 6800 pci-e ultra on an Asus p5gd2 deluxe mobo with a gig of ddr533 ram...

PCI Express > AGP

if money really isn’t an issue you can go the path of SLI. Witch is basically using two video cards to get twice the power.

get a new mobo that is SLI compatible and you should get a good video card like a geforce 7800 pci express. you will need two of them. then you plug one in each pci express slot and then connect them together. not to mention with that hook up i believe you could run 4 monitors simultaneously.

Around the end of January/early February im going to begin building me a new computer and money will not be an object (Yeah is that awesome or what!! I lucked out =D) anyway that’s the path im going with my video cards.

And pricewatch.com is an awesome place to get good deals you just gotta read and make sure you are getting the right thing. Although I too am getting my mobo and vid cards from new egg cause I found some good deals. If you want links to some good pci express mobos i found, I can post them here.

i dought agp is being fazed out.in fact look how long isa and eisa lasted,mca was the only bus slot that didnt do well but that was ibm's own fault.
agp is still the most popular and agp was made to avoid any system bus bottle necking but they still make a cheaper pci version.
i personnally say agp all the way.the name says it all.....accelerated graphics port...it does exactly what it says on the box.
i noticed in some of the shops they mainly only stock pci cards so i asked why and the answer was the same,to compete with other bigger stores they cant compete with the agp prices so they buy pci as mopst people dont know the difference anyway apart from different connectors.
agp are more expensive than the pci versions...why??????? because they are better.

AGP are more expensive cos they have the pricing for the old standard whilst the makers are promoting the newer standard, AGP is MUCH slower and less flexible, PCI express is so fast it can use your main PC ram as local GPU memory in special cases (not to be confused with the way onboard GFX uses local ram...this is a whole different kettle of fish), from now on AGP is the province of budget PC`s and AGP8x is for low to mid range gamer systems, any serious system now uses PCI-express and new motherboards are PCI-express too, don`t get confused by thinking PCI-express has anything in common with the old PCI slots, this is a whole new (high speed) ball game.



PS: still haven`t forgotten about that slide collision, just busy atm.

Windows: 32 bit extension/graphical shell for a 16bit patch to an 8bit OS originally coded for a 4bit CPU, written by a 2bit company that can't stand 1bit of competition, now available in 64bits.

ill look into pci-e but im happy running everything on my agp,the last things i ran are farcry and doom3,it has no problems with fpsc or large terrains in dbpro.

just so you know what im using
amd 2800 mobile athlon
2gig ram
geforce fx 5500 ( agp )256

up to now i havnt found anything it wont run,including 3ds max and cinema 4d,though i keep the models low poly for obvoius reasons ( but not too low)

It cant be that slower, because I got better bench ranks on my agp 6600 than a pcie 6600 at my friends. Maybe brand quality, donno:p

just seen the prices of the pce-e and all i can say is........they can keep them,for the price of a mobo and graphics card i could build an agp system,and since agp hasnt let me down then i shall sit back and see how pci-e does,wehter or not it takes over,but if it becomes popular and as good as you all say then in time the prices will also drop due to the massive competition.
