Spyware driving you nuts? Just get something like Spybot and wipe it clean of that junk. I use Norton, Spybot, and some AOL spyware junk my wife installed.

I hate formatting, I keep everything as clean as I possibly can.

Spyware and Adware was a problem ages a go, adware still is, but its not the only problem, everything is slow now, everything takes ages to load, programs keep stop responding, and well anti virus can't detect anything, and today, one thing I find I am not able to do any more, upload files, I tried to upload an image for a thread in 3D talk, didn't tried others thinks, so I'm just gonna back my I-tunes library and DBP/Cinema 4D/Texture files and firefox installer (So I don't have to touch IE which is where my problems always start on these reinstallations ) and restart the bugger, I've been waiting to months of looking at solutions, so I'll just take the easy way out

get your windows disk, pop it in your machine and restart so you boot from thte disk, follow it through tell it to delete the partition then to just install windows(don't get it to create a partition cause telling it to install will make it do it for you) then just follow the prompts

If you are going to re-format your hard drive, make sure you have backups of everything you need and installation cds for everything you need, especially your Windows CD and your modem drivers with net connection software and your account details.

If you are really lucky, your pc will com with a reinstall disk that will do it all for you. But if not, to actually format your hard drive, one of the best ways is a full dos format. The method I use is (probably overkill )

1: Use an old Windows 98 boot disk or cd to get to a proper dos prompt without loading windows.
2: type "format c:" and got through the process of saying yes to everything.
3: Type "fdisk" (you your windows CD if don't have it elsewhere) and delete your partition, then create a new one.
4: restart, type "format c:" again, just to make sure the partition is empty and clear
5: type "scandisk" to do a full dos scandisk which should find any bad sectors on your hard drive and either fix them or mark them so the hard drive will always ignore them
6: Restart the pc with the windows CD in the drive. It should boot off it and install, if not, press "Delete" whilst starting your pc to enter your bios and set primary boot device as CD-Rom
7: Proceed to install windows, then your modem and net connection software
8: Connect to net and download latest drivers for everything else

Note that if you are installing XP, its a very good idea to download and burn SP1 & 2 to a CD to install, as if you go online to download them with a pre sp2 copy of xp, chances are you'll be full of adwaqre and spyware before you've managed to download the updates that stop them

I am not taking any responsibility for if you try and do this though - its very easy to muck it up Good luck

the easy route is to stick your XP disk in, restart, and select fresh install, do what it says, and it'll do the rest for you pretty much.

contery to (apparantly) popular belief, its not that hard, XP guides you through. but yeah, download SP1+2 and burn them to disk, that is, if your computer can still manage to do it.

I remember my first PC slowed to a crawl eventually, until it took about 5 minutes to clear IE's history

I don't have a sig, live with it.

don`t forget to make sure you have all the driver disks or your makers system restore disks, some install programs are incredibly dumb, I have had drivers refuse to install cos the screen was not 16bit or higher , had to install the video driver first just to get the modem driver to load, so it was just as well I actualy had the correct driver for the video card and wasn`t relying on downloading it, (and have you tried to use windows at 320x240 in 16 colours...yeeetch!

Windows: 32 bit extension/graphical shell for a 16bit patch to an 8bit OS originally coded for a 4bit CPU, written by a 2bit company that can't stand 1bit of competition, now available in 64bits.

NOOOO!!! The recovery disk didn't work, I mean it started up with it there, and just stayed there with the '_' flashing constantly, so I thought maybe its just slow to load, when to take a shower and it stayed there so I restarted the PC using the keyboard, any ideas anyone? It is the right start up disk, nicked it from my Dad and he should know because he's rebooted this thing several times before.

Why dont you just get your dad to do it? Reinstalling is a dodgy thing to be doing if you dont have someone to hand who knows what their doing...

Sorry but unless you can tell us the exact version of the recovery disk, (what make/brand of pc, version number etc, should be printed on it or its sleeve) And exactly what spec pc you are using I doubt anybody will be able to help you, as recovery disks are not at all standard, unlike a normal windows installation

Firefox and Thunderbird are great for severely cutting down on infections from spy and adware. I have learned, however, not to rely on them for keeping your inbox or favourites list, as quite often they dissapear! (This happens to me once every couple of months) They are still on your harddrive and you can restore them, but without a fuss they won't read them and keep trying to start a fresh account! Just a warning

Yes - its more of a problem when your inbox goes, as I often keep emails that I mean to reply to, or forget to print off reciepts until its too late
