A few months back I got myself and iBook (using it now). Its great, I can now access music and do work anywhere in my house... However, it being the base model iBook - its not exactly a powerhouse. I have noticed that once I have loaded up iTunes, Firefox, Dreamweaver and a shell - it starts to bog down a little.

Obviously, the solution is a RAM upgrade. That, I already know. My question is, how much? I currently have 512Mb which, from what I can tell by documentation, is onboard. I have yet to take it to bits to find out. I have found that scan.co.uk do a corsair SODIMM 1Gb stick of PC2700 fir £90 which is under half what apple want to charge me.

So, for all those mac users out there;
1) Does the Mac benifit from 1.5Gb in total, or do you think 1Gb in total would be enough (bare in mind that 512Mb is about a third the price, but I only have 1 spare slot (I think)).
2) Is it worth paying Apple a premium rate for the RAM so I have the garuntee it will work? From the documents, it looks ridiculously easy to upgrade - so tech wise I would be fine. My concern is compatibility. I dont wanna spend £100 on a stick of RAM only to have to spend another £200 with Apple because it wont work. Would a stick of Crucial or Corsair RAM be fine?

Cheers guys

hi dude.

my apple technician mate in sydney said to max out the ibook in ram 768 or so is the max, depending on the model.

he said you should only pay around 30 pounds for the upgraded ram.

before you pull it apart

click on the apple
click on about this mac
click on more info
click on memory

if it has a warrarnty plan

click the apple
click on about this mac
click on HARDWARE if its not clicked and look for the serial number at the bottom of that datas page

then visit www.apple.[yourcountrydomain]/support

mine is www.apple.com.au/support

on the right hand side is an area to insert your serial number to see if the warrranty or apple extra life care plan is still active.

macs hate it when you mix ram and can be a problematic issue if you do.
always try to get the same manufacturer etc..

Thanks for the links - the seperate partition theory looks good. Might look into doing that, although I only have a 40Gb drive..

When you say about mixing RAM, the 512Mb I have now is onboard - I cant think of anyway of finding the brand of the onboard RAM.

I'll try the warranty thing tonight. I dont recall purchasing any extra support though - mainly because I have these forums

you will have to read the manufacturers name off the ram stick if that doesnt work.
mixing manufacturers can sometimes be painfull but if its the same speed etc it should be ok
