Just recently my hard drive images on My Computer folder are turning into those unknown icon images. How do I get my pictures of a Hard Drive back? What's happening?

im using a norwegian OS so my translation might not be correct:

in winXP open "my computer",
in menu bar select "tools",
in drop down menu select "folder properties".

in tab menu, select "filetypes",
under tab "filetypes" where all the entrys for filetypes are, find "disk"

select that line that holds the "disk" string in it, and click "advanced".
click "change icon" and find your disk icon.

(standard icons are located at: "C:\WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll")

and there you have it

edit,
i uploaded a graphical explanation

Have you rebooted properly recently? It could be just Windows' icon cache going phunk3h. It does that to some people after too much uptime.

I have rebooted a few times, and my drive has a fresh install. I copied all of the files from E: to G: so maybe one of the files is doing something weird.......

Might have something to do with the volume label. Local,system.. etc.

This happens to my drives when I leave an incorrectly written autorun.ini on them. If it can't find the icon referenced in the ini file, it shows the funny no-icon symbol. (assuming drive d:\ is a CD-ROM, this may be your problem if you tried to copy D: content to the other drive)

I found out it was because my Palm was uninstalled. Palm adds that shared drive thing to the icons, and when it is removed it somehow messes the other icons up.
