I am fixing up this computer to run the Windows XP it has on it, that is useless at the moment, until I get this .dll file installed, and I have it on my computer, I just need to put it in the right place. This is probably something kinda redundant and should be obvious but I'm truly stuck. Upon start-up of Windows XP(technically not far enough along to really be a start-up) it says that there is a file corrupt or missing, hal.dll from <windows root>\system32\hal.dll, and I need to know how I would go about putting it back. Thanks.

copy hal.32 to the system32 folder inside the windows folder (C:\windows), in most cases thats all you need to do, replace the corrupt dll with a good one.

it could be a virus, have you tried repairing the system from the install cd?, failing that is the boot.ini file ok, try copying a known good file over to your system (boot.ini is a text file, you could compare them to see what differences you have there), boot.ini, hal32.dll and ntldr are the three things you need to boot the system, if any of them are broken then windows will not start.

edit] changed ntloader to ntldr

-.- That's nice, because there is no original disk, or anything. The computer is used. Looks like XP isn't running anytime soon. I'm stickin with ME it would appear.

try this:
Start > run > regsvr32 <<dllpath>>
(obviously excluding the << >> - well! after being on IRC for years and seeing what some people do, I'm not here to assume)

[EDIT: My bad, I realised that you can't fully boot up in to windows yet ]

you can get a Linux disk called EBCD (emergency boot CD), I have used it a couple of times to rescue a hosed PC, try downloading that, just make the cd, stick it in the mucked up `puter then boot it, it gives you a whole host of tools to mess about with and more importantly allows you look around the hard drive and fix broken files, remove NT/XP passwords, repair the MBR etc.

[EDIT] clicky linky thingy hic

free download/use (said that just in case .com worries you)
read the tools description and give it a try, nothing to lose.

some of those solutions above require you to be able to boot the windows CD, you should be able to use EBCD (now UBCD) instead to get acess to the boot ini file for example and check that the correct partition values are present or whatever (since you don`t have the windows disk).

It's not my 'puter and there's no way that the owner(who I live with) would let me do anything of that measure...ME works and that's all he really cares about(even though it doesn't work well)
