Hey guys, I'm making a FPS game with my friend and I'm trying to make the gun look more realistic, 3D. Because right now it just looks like a picture of a gun pasted on to the screen. It doesn't even look 3D. How do I make look better? Do I add lighting? Shadows? What do I need?

You could pre-render the texture to have its own lighting. So the gun has shadows all of the time.

I don't get it. You pasted a picture of a gun model on the screen, or you're gun model looks like a picture pasted on the screen?

Anyway. Textures have a big deal to create reality objects, like Pincho Paxton said. But, you have to create the model in 3D ofcourse using an editor like milkshape, anim8or, Wings, etc.

If you want to have an image to paste, I would suggest rendering the view in the editor itself like you want it as an image, so you can use it in you're games.

OK, I have been contacted by Asylum and here is the problem:

The gun has to sway, which means, no lock object on. that's what should create the more realistic gun.

We tried my suggestion, using offset limb gun,x,y,z and positioning the object to the camera.
The problem was, that the offset limb didn't do what it had to do. the gun stays on the same position until you reach a certain value(a very high one. I calculated the Y and it was -114284).

We would like not to position the gun just below the camera because when you look up or down, the camera will be in the gun itself.

I replaced the object to one of my objects, and it has the same problem. So the model is fine.

Pre-render means make a 3D model of a gun. Use something like Lithunwrap to make some UV coordinates, and to make a blank texture. Make a coloured texture of the gun with an art package using metallic looking colours like grey. Load the model back into a 3D modelling package. Now Render the gun from both sides, top, and bottom, and save all of these images as bmp's. Make sure that the renders have a good lighting effect. The renders should look shaded, overly contrasted colours. Now you can Box map these renders back onto the gun a second time. This time the gun will look much better.

Just what I need to see - my own modelling efforts are terrible, so I take a break from that board, and what do I see on this one?

...maybe one day I'll finish a project

hm.. your gun looks 2d , i have a solution , dont make it just have more polygons or so , it wont help , you hafe to make it like less flet if you know what i mean like :

imagen your gun in game in perspective of a classic fps , ok , now just change the left and right side to be as less flat as it can , and you have a solution , like pipes are bit wider or something...

i make free 3d models , then you tell me some stuff about usseles posts and then something heppen...
