I want to back up a 100gb partition to a 26gb partition. The 100gb partition is just using up 22gb of data, but all of the programs that I have tried require another 100gb partition. I tried windows XP Backup, but that can only backup 4gb maximum.

How can I Backup my 100gb partition to another Hard Drive that only has 26gb data remaining.

It must be free...

Pincho.

if you use partition magic you can resize partitions if im not mistaken then you could use another program to transfer it all.

I mentioned this on another thread today, download UBCD, burn it to cd, boot from that, then use the tools on the disk to resize and/or clone the contents to the other patition, great tool, saved trashed systems with this before, essential imo.

[edit] do be sure you know what you are doing before you do it tho`, don`t blame me if you wipe the wrong partition or whatever , the same warning would apply to commercial software anyway, but just so you know.

I don't wish to mess around with my partition size because I have found that the Maxtor SATA hard drives are easy to destroy if you dont use MAXBLAST 4. Windows XP can't even format the drive properly without corrupting it. So I just want to copy all of my files to another drive, including the registry, and installed programs.

well i believe norton ghost can do what you want, it can copy a partition to another or can back it up on other media - it can also create up to date backup that rely on the original but are only very small to represent the changes on the disk

oh! SATA , simple solution <insert smiley with lightbulb above it> (I thought I would try the difficult answer first), if you are putting everything back into the original partition when you are done then use the XP files and settings transfer wizard thingy, it backs up everything in sight afaik, just make sure you have enough room to restore everything ,I tried splitting 160gig in half and the damn thing couldn`t restore because it saved some stuff I didn`t realise it actualy would do (clipart archives), that made the recovery fail cos it tried to restore 40gig of clipart I hadn`t intended to carry over since I could restore it off the CD`s to the new second partition , you can find it in.

start/all programs/accesories/system tools/files and settings transfer wizard
