I got Quake 4 for christmas (I love it ) but I've noticed the rating (18, which I can't understand as I haven't really seen any 15+ material in the game) icon is like 2 or 3 times the size it used to be. I also saw it on 50 Cent's (urgh) game.

What's with that?

maybe its the blood an gore, plus people tend to use the ratings as a advertising ploy as well, the idea is kids will want the game more if they think it`s forbidden fruit, and the older users expect more hardcore gameplay, plus have you got far enough to find those rocket women?, from the demo I seem to recall they have all the old QuakeII baddies for the early levels brought up to date, so maybe the rocketlauncher girls show up later in the game and are scantily clad or something like that.

Windows: 32 bit extension/graphical shell for a 16bit patch to an 8bit OS originally coded for a 4bit CPU, written by a 2bit company that can't stand 1bit of competition, now available in 64bits.

It's not the 18 rating that's my reason for concern, its the actual size of the icon!

if you havnt seen any 15+ content yet then you cant be far in, you get to see people cut up and organs removed and all sorts of unsightly things in that came. IMHO its a shame, because i dont need to see that, it adds nothing for me. Excellent game, lots of great quake-style blasting, Gibbing a corpse is all about the quake fun natch. But i think theres such a thing as too much detail and some of the cut scenes are pretty grusome. Prefer stuff like that left to the imagination - but i geuss the problem is this generation has no imagination

still, enjoyed the game - definatly an 18 though.

EDIT - and i guess its that big to make the point and so mothers can hopfully stop "not seeing it"

Some manufacturers are increasing the size of the age ratings to look like they are making an effort as parents keep buying adult games for their kids then trying to sue claiming they didn't know it would be so violent, gory, sexual or whatever.

They're probably just trying to make it more obvious for parents. All good as far as I'm concerned. If they decide it's okay for their kids to play, great, but the whole purpose of the ratings is to offer warning. And personally I wouldn't want my 11 year old playing something quite that graphic .

it's because of all these friggen lawsuits, the parents previous to this year, pretty much ignored ratings on video games, now they're sueing companies

Yea, it definitely earned the M(I'm in US) rating in my opinion. Lots of blood and gore in it, people smashed under doors, open stomachs and heads, legs getting sawed off. Yea. Plus it uses the f word at least twice and I'm only about half-way through the game.

meh the 11 year olds here use that word more than any other age group. but the gore definitely earns it the 18 sticker which should be nice and big in my opinion. really emphasises that it deserves it.

Its rated 18 here...

First impressions : Its completely ordinary - so far I haven't found anything new or innovative... Worthly of £9.99, but certainly not £30

And its now been finished, with the usual mysterious ending.. Its so nice being able to see how much damage your causing to the end of level baddies.
