This is screenshot from project I am just working on

Model is not finished yet, need still some texturing work and some limbs do not have right orientation. I am using it for making some code.

Nice- how many polies is the ship? Make sure you have some nice 'rocking' effects for the ship in the water

Looks nice! Hows it play though o_O

Its 924 poligons

There are no water efects yet, I was working on cannon fire last.
There is dinamic shifting matrix, ship rotation due to wave changes and camera modeled.
I was making also code for rising and lowering sails and their changes due to wind direction and strongnes but its still not implemented in project.
I also started to work on limb colision.

how should you do this? making the sails as different objects and scale them? or are you going to manipulate the polygons?

anyway, looks good, I like it when people post screenshots here (it doens't happen often)

I did them like limbs and scale them in z and y axis, I did some testing and its looking wery good and realistic.
I can do like this also some wind efects on sails like if wind is stronger, sails z scale is increasing and oposit.

First I wanted to make it by animating mesh, but when I tested scaling, I find out that efect is good enough and to scale is more simple than to make several diferent meshes and animate them.

And thanks for your positive replays

Looks truespace..ish to me. Never used it but it doesnt look like 3ds max, Maya or Lightwave, or milkshape so I just threw that one up.

BTW freak its using mostly for and next kinda stuff. checking for speed and stuff and adjusting the mast accordingly. Well, in a nutshell

Well I am using Microstation for basic poligon modeling. Dont know if you heard about it. Then I import it to anim8tor or Truespace for final adjustment and texturing.

By the way who or what is BTW freak?

Hey indi, i am using microstation already for 7 or 8 years and I know autocad too but I would newer skip to autocad...

And Brent_Seraphim, what do you mean by I second QuoththeRaven? may be I missed something again?

Yeah - that does look good! There doesn't seem to be much in the way of shading, but that's DarkBasic's fault, isn't it?

One little suggestion: the sails look a bit plain just being white. If you've got any more artistic talent than me (quite likely), then perhaps you could try adding some creases and wrinkles to the texture. Also, I don't know what the ship's for, but if it's the player who owns the ship, perhaps you could let them decide on a logo to print onto the sails? That would be quite nice.

I think you had misunderstood my question

I was asking how he would do the movement of the sails. A possibility would be having these sails as limbs and scale them.

freak, are you doing something similar?

no, I'm woking at a cards game

AARRRGH me hearties is it a pirate game??
and most importantly is there gonna be a talkin' parrot?

Well it's a cool low poly ship anyways.

How were you doing the sails in the wind bit? I'm trying to make a cape flap in the wind- same sort of thing i guess but I'm running outa time for such luxuries enhancements for 2 days...

to Dr DooMer:

Yes there is not too much I can do about shading. I am using DB standard and as much as i was trying DBpro is bit better.

Well sails and most of the other parts of ship exept hull are not textured yet, but I am working on it. Right now I was remaking model, because I was not totaly satisfied with one you see on pictures. In next days, if there be some free time left I will try to finish texturing.

Untill now whole project is not too much playeable, there is just sea physic and few controls modeled.
But I was thinking to let the player choose its flag to fly.

to Danmatsuma:
Yes that should be little pirate game if I will ever finish it
talkin' parrot? whats that?

Sails are just scaling due to wind so its not exactly what you would need for cape flag, but I plan to do something similar and my idea is to make flag out of several limbs and to rotate them using cosinus function may be with some limited randomization. The same thing I use for sea matrix wave efect.

Pirates have always got a parrot (all the good ones, anyway), but it takes a really special pirate to have a talkin' parrot!

I'm actually still using DBClassic, too. There seems to be something a bit iffy with the lighting, but it can usually be fixed by setting all the lights up manually, even the light 0.

to Dr DooMer:

Ok I looked finaly to the dictionary for what parrot is and now its clean to me.
And yes I was thinking to include one in the game. Idea was that it could give player some tips about game in certain situations, but this is deep detail and now I still need to solve much more basic things so I will see if there be one finaly or not

I was also making some experiments with lights and I find out that they have relatively small efect on the scene. What I did finaly was that I set ambient to moderate level and colored it little bit grey. Like this I made ambient bit darker. Then I just set up one directional light from sun direction.
Thats best I find out...

to Mach:

First picture here is screenshot from DB and water you see there is textured matrix with ghost matrix on comand.

You could make the parrot so it jumps from shoulder to shoulder, like when it's on the left it screeches things like
"Raaaaape and pilliage Cap'n' RaaaAAAAPE and pilliage!!
But when it jump's onto the right it steers you in the "right" direction.
Like a constant voice, MrTAToad's got a dll that might be good for that though I haven't been able to try it..no enhancements

No harm in thinkin' about parrots at ANY stage of the game

of course the polly count would be higher with a parrot

if the parrot put in, and then removed, could it be termed a 'polly gone'?

Perhaps you do a small parrot and a very tall parrot, both of noble birth. Then you could have both a 'low polly Count', and a 'high polly Count'...

thank the lord it's nearly home time...

Thinking about it though - would be good if it's not a single player game, coz then 'toucan' play...

Nice idea to do this using limbs and with a certain randomisation (I like it when things are randomly decided)

Have you already made some progress in your game?

It would be kewl to see a preview (compiled exe)
