For anyone who is a student from primary school to university there are academic versions of the maya software at:

http://www.alias.com/eng/education/products_students/getting_started_advanced_student_bundles.shtml

http://www.academicsuperstore.com/mfg/?c=Alias

I just wondered if anyone has had any experience with these academic versions and if they know how feature restricted they are. From what I can tell they are fully working versions of the software, however you cannot use them for commercial projects.

I am interested in the Maya 7 Complete student edition version.

Any information on the subject would be greatly appreciated,

Mike

PS I know I have already mentioned this in another topic in the 3d chat, but i felt that more people would benefit from it here, and i may be able to get more information as this is where most users frequent. If any mods have a problem then feel free to lock/move this topic and accept my apologies.

I think you're referring to maya personal learning edition (or maya ple for short). It's free for non-commercial use so is a good idea if you want to try maya before spending money on it. I've had a go with it and after looking at some tuts it was a lot easier to get started than I thought, it watermarks your renders iirc. Here's a link to version 7:: http://www.alias.com/glb/eng/products-services/product_details.jsp?productId=1900003

There would be mucho appreciation if someone using a mac with the aqua theme could contact me. Have lost HD icon.

I have friends who all use maya (at school, ple, bought it) and they all think it's teh best. My one friend just barely got it, so he's been taking on the intarweb tuts, and there are a ton of tutorials online. I don't think you could go wrong with Maya if you are dedicated to modeling. Maya has some really really neat tools

Maya rocks, but not if you're aiming to export to .x

maya ple sucks arse - huge watermark, and no export. Don't download it unless you're actually thinking about buying Maya and getting serious with modeling.

For me, Maya is slow, makes you click on more things to do what you want, and is generally difficult to use. Why should you have to specificly "carve out" a shape, when there are other packages where you can make it, size it, and then if you dont like it, you can delete it. I love GameSpace all the way

I know about and have been using the Maya Personal Learning Edition. I was very pleased with the program and interface, and have been able to get some very pleasing results including a castle, pod racer, and NURBS race course. Only problem was the watermarks bugged me to hell and back, and I couldn't export to anything that DBPro could use.

The Academic versions of complete/unlimited are identical to the normal software. The only difference is you can't use them for anything commercial. This is an ideal solution for me as I would only use the models for small hobby games. If i ever wish to upgrade then i can buy an upgrade to the commercial version which still works out considerably cheaper than buying the software straight off. I plan to buy the academic version in a month or two.

yeah, but lets see you make a full fledged movie in GameSpace (like the Warcraft III videos, or even something like Veggie Tales) that's where the real power of Maya comes out, not nessisarily to make models for games (altho, it's used to do so).

In all honesty, i really really like 3DS for working with 3d models tho. mostly because that was one of the first modeling packages, and I got used to the UI, but I don't have the CASH to BUY it, so it's gone.
