Firstly, it depends on what type of interface you have: PCI Express, AGP, or even just PCI. Most fairly new cards use PCI Express, but there are plenty of good AGP cards. Also, it depends on your budget, as some of them are well over $200 or $300.
The card I'm using right now, a Geforce 6800 128MB AGP, plays most new games on medium or high settings. Unfortunately, I'm limited to AGP so the 6800 series is as high as I can go.
Basically, if you want a solid, reasonably priced card, I'd recommend going with a Geforce 6800, and depending on your budget, you could get an older or newer model, such as the 6200, 6600, 7800. I can't recommend or oppose any ATI cards, since I've never had one.

Not that it has anything to do with the conversation above but there are nvidia 6800 series PCI-E cards, just so ya know. I have one!

Nvidia FX series are nice, better than what I have
I'd go with the Nvidia GT 512mb (I think that's what it was called...).

If you have the moenym get an AGP version Nvidia 6800 - they are great cards, you can usually pick them up for around 150quid

However if you can't afford that much, I would advise against getting a low to middle range card, and instead get a top of the range but older card second hand, for example a radeon 9700pro can be won on ebay for around 30 quid, and will far out perform a brand new 6200 or 7200 and still be half the price...

Just my 2cents though I kow people get very territorial when graphics cards are discussed around here My advice, do your research before you buy a model that "looks" like it'll do the job

Lol, I've played UT2004 on 56k before and it's a lot more playable than you'd think. Every 15 minutes I'd have to go and make a cup of tea when the lag caught up with me and made it unplayable for about 5 minutes. But apart from that it was killing sprees all round.

hey Soul,

along with a few other things that I'm saving up for, I'm planning to get an Nvidi FX 5200 with 128mb onboard video over at CompUSA or at Frys Electronics. At CompUSA, it was about $79 dollars or so.
I just don't know whether to get AGP or PCI. I have one AGP slot but must make sure that the video card is compatible up to least AGP 4x. Also, on my HP computer are 2 PCI slots.
I think these will due. Never had a 3d graphics card installed on any of my computers. Just the good ole 3d chipsets on integrated motherboards. Lets see....Trident for my old Compaq Presario which I still have and use for backup. And for my HP computer I have SiS 650
integrated 3d chipset.

cheers,

Um - seriously guys I havbe an FX5200 AGP 128mb card. Its not a bad card at all, but my 9700pro outperforms it by 3 times and was nearly half the price! 5200 is the lowest of the FX cards, hense top range older cards WILL outperform it by miles. The FX5200 is comparitively very slow when it comes to shaders. I'm not trying to insult anyone's card, but I was amazed by how much better this older card was when a friend of mine told me to benchmark them next to each other The only FX card that will outperform a 900pro is the FX 5950 Ultra - now thats a cool card

The 5200 is great for a lot of games, doesn't slow down. The Movies, The Sims 2, and Unreal 2003 are all great on full settings, But Doom 3, and Half Life 2 are probably going to struggle a lot. I'd go for the 6800.

Nobody should get a normal PCI slot graphic card when they have AGP. PCI Express is not PCI. So get AGP if you don't have PCI Express.

Don't get 5200 if you can afford 6800.

Yes I recommended the 6800 if he could afford it. And yes, definitely AGP cards are better than standard PCI ones
