I want to take a moment to recommend this Sci-Fi series to those of you have not seen it and are over the legal age to watch post-watershed TV in your respective countries (as it deals with adult topics).

I went out and bought the DVD based on a friend's recommendation. I confess to being very sceptical at first because I knew Firefly had been written by Joss "Buffy" Whedon, and I have no time for Buffy. Imagine my surprise, therefore, when it transpired that Firefly is absolutely excellent. I am most delighted.

I can't stand Buffy, and Firefly is really a fantastic series. Damn shame they cancelled it, but at least it's cheaper to own the whole series on DVD .

I assume you've probably seen the movie sequel/wrap-up Serenity, but if not, be sure to, as it's also excellent.

Seen both, and they're awesome. It'd be really cool if they started making the sereis again, as the movie did leave room for a continued story.

Then it'd not only be the one canceled sereis to be made into a movie, but also the only one to be made into a movie and then started back up again.

I agree with the above - Firefly is quite quite ace. Watched it several months ago on the recommendation of a workmate. He's a Buffy fan, I'm not - but we both agree Firefly is great.

It's cowboys in space, after all! How can it not be ace?!

Annoyingly Serenity was not a big hit. Saw an interview with Whedon in SFX the other day, and basically *if* they make a sequel it will probably go straight to DVD. Probably. They reckon the main reason is there wasn't a big star in it. Doh.

Still, hopefully the studios will surprise us. Some good news is that (even with awful advertising) it got to the number one slot in the box office when it came out in the UK (only for a weekend, but still...). Thats gotta help. Plus Film 2005 (most well known UK film review show) gave it the film of the year award (beating Batman begins). Totally amazingly suprising that one. And it was voted for by the public (and Film 2005 loved it too). Possible more geeky elements of the public knew how to abuse the voting system than the chav quarter that voted for more, well, chav films, but whatever, got to be worth something....

Cheers

Its better Learn where all the characters came from, get to know them better. Learn why Reavers are so scary.

Yeah... uh I really wouldn't say this isn't a show for older people... I think those who like sci-fi in general should be able to watch it even if their on the younger side... I mean come on the movie (Serenity) was only PG-13, and Firefly wasn't that inappropriate either...

Firefly and Serenity were brilliant, shame they were not as big of a hit as they should have been. They should have got a big star to play the assassin guy in the movie...

Hrm there were some moments that were quite nasty in the series. I imagine if the series carried on it would have got a lot darker.

bit of a spoiler:

I watched Firefly just because it came on the Sci-Fi channel (my favorite channel). I fell in love with it instantly.

hey Philip,

and everybody here too

I got Firefly the series on DVD from my brother Wes as a Christmas present. I tell you all....I never really heard about it nor this Serenity movie until my brother Mark wanted to see the movie in the theaters.
My first response to him was: 'oh no!!!, not another love-sick sour romance comedy!'. My brother laughed and said that its a science fiction and has these weird zombie like creatures called Reavers. And that it has a space crew like those old Star Trek series you like and especially Space:Above and Beyond.
So...we went and saw the movie. Oh man!, it was awesome!!! It was really great and the best movie that I have seen this year...even better than Aeon Flux. And, I really liked Aeon Flux too.

I want to watch the DVD series....yet(qouth the power mousey) I'm really into watching Myster Science Theater 3000 on DVD, and also
both SCTV and the first season of Wonder Woman too. I will eventually get around to watch the tv series of Firefly.
I also wish the first season of Invasion came out on DVD too.

cheers,

Best scene is in one of the 1st episodes when this guy (who is tied up next to other bad guys) is saying to the main bloke how he is going to track him down no matter where he goes, and he will haunt his dreams etc etc. Totally sets him up to be the main bad guy of the series. After he finishes his speech the main bloke kicks him hard sending him flying into the engines of his ship (to one side). Arf. None of the others want to track him down after that one.

Oooh, ooh, used to *love* that program. No-one else used to watch it because it was on like 1 o'clock in the morning or something. Totally funny though. I noticed though, like a Kebab, that it is far far better after a night on the razz. Oh yes

Cheers

Absolutely loved that scene. I have to give Whedon credit for having a fantastic sense of humor.

Hilarity I think we've got a few DVDs of that around.

hey Ian and Dazzag,

ummm...not to take anything away from both Serenity and Firefly. And sorry if I go on a tangent concerning Mystery Science Theater

Yet.....some of my best shows of these awful, low budge movies are:

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, Manos: Hands of Fate, The Brain that Wouldn't Die, Monster A-GO-GO, Girl in the Gold Boots, Legend of Boggy Creek II, and Merlins Magical Shop of Mystical Wonders. Oh yeah, can't forget Santa Claus Conquers the Martians too.
Even Mister Bs' Lost Shorts(the short films) were really funny, weird and entertaining too. That GM car promo comercial of cars of the future was fun to watch...especially the 'schnick razor type' car model.

My all time worst low budge movies are: Hillybilly Brides, Manos:Hands of Fate, The Package, Hillybillies in a Haunted House...yes!! , The Day They Saved Hitlers Brain...yuck!!!, and
the 1960 tv version of Shakespeares Hamlet...starring Maximilian Schell. Too much low budge awfullness in a dark trajedy. An Irwin Allen medieval festival...where most of the sets and scenes were small and everything else was dark and had black backgrounds.

Tying it all together and getting back to the main topic at hand.... so, when I see tv series and movies such as Serenity, Star Trek series, Invasion, Lost, Firefly and a few others its like a breath of fresh air for me and gives me hope that not all tv series and not all movies are bad.

have a Monster of A GO-GO,

cheers,

Well hopefully the rumours of reality TV being on a downward popularity curve are true. Get rid of all that s***e basically, and bring back more decent TV....

As to B-Movies, I must admit I loved loads of them. Can't remember most, as seem to watch most in hazy alcopop state at 2am when I was younger, but most funny at the time. I liked the japanese ones Gozilla stuff was tops, but that one with the kids and the alien invasion is just the best (think Science theatre also covered it). Laughed myself stupid on that one

Cheers

Apart from Enterprise obviously (if you ignore the first half of the last series, which was pretty good overall).

Cheers

Ps. Why had they not heard of the Borg after "Enterprise"?????? No-one conveniently altered the past to get rid of them.... grrrrr....

Ok, slightly more on topic, but a dangerous question:

Has anyone heard if they're making a proper Firefly/Serenity game? Not the mobile phone one, not the 'Battle For Serenity' one, not the pen and paper RPG one - a proper one.

Anyone know? Anyone else think that someone somewhere MUST be doing one. It's just too juicy to pass up??

If there is a game being made hopefully we won't see it for a few years and it's being made by a company or group of people who actually know what they are doing (i.e. NOT EA games or sony!)

Well, I'd be imagining it would be a Vivendi Games production, Vivendi Universal being the ones who published the film.

To be honest, I'd expected a rushed job game out already - seemed like every film last year got a game, after all Kind of glad it didn't happen, really.

Oh god not a firefly game... That would completely ruin it for me. I just can't see firefly being made into a great game... who know though? Maybe they can make it into an amazing game.

Yah I have to admit A firefly game might completely alienate an entire generation of game players from ever watching the show but oh well. I want a game where I can fly around in a firefly class spaceship and shoot people with a revolver helping the browncoats defeat the evil alliance. Sorry for going on a tangent but firefly is my favourite TV show in, well, in ever. I really hope they bring it back but it might not be the same seeing as how they killed off two characters and the girl is not quite as insane as she was before but Oh well whatever. I still like mal and jane and even Jayne Cobb, hell hes my favourite. Who can't love a guy who talks weapons eats weapons and is a weapon? Anyway My favourite episode of firefly was probably "out of gas" or "jaynestown" and I own the Entire series plus the movie and Im working on getting the RPG and Entire firefly universe book. As you can see I have joined the cult of firefly and it will not let me go...Darn you joss whedon and your well written humour!
Oh and amazing story plots. We cant forget them.
