hello everyone.

I have just uploaded a beta demo of phoenicas, my year long 2d shooter project.

I would appreciate the community's input. bugs, gameplay, opinions and system stats are greatly appreciated. please reply to this thread.
my system is p4 2.7 512mb with a proper (1.5yearold) 3d card, and slowdowns very little in crowded scenes - I'd say its perfectly playable.

expires january 10th.

info, screenshots, instructions on the game is here:
http://www.mytaras.com/phoenicas.html

default keyboard controls are:
z,x: move left and right
space: fire
right shift: shield
/: autostraight (or cancel autoaim)
<,>: rotate left and right (used in expert modes)
these can be changed through the options menu.

note: the program can be strict as to whats happening in its own folder, so when a problem arises (it shouldnt), please reinstall.

some words on the game:
After a successful alien attack on earth, only 6 humans escaped. Five are onboard non-firing space vessels and one (you) is piloting the only remaining fighting craft. Your mission is to guard the vessels on the journey to safety. Aliens will attack the convoy and try to kill you and abduct the vessels, eliminating the human race.
Phoenicas is an action-oriented musical 2d shooter in the styles of defender, exerion, phoenix, ikaruga and space invaders. Blast the invaders to pieces while protecting the last remaining humans, using upgradeable weapons and powerups and fight your way through the choreographed levels and game modes to achieve the highest scores. Score by combos, fastkills, selective shooting and accuracy, as well as effectively protecting and rescuing humans from the hands of the aliens.

cheers and looking forward to your comments.

This looks really good - don't withdraw it! I don't think its a lack of interest at all, it should be under "work in Progress" or "Program Announcements" as people looking under this section of the forums are looking to post problems / questions etc not test stuff. Maybe a mod could move it for you?

Where is the demo?

I was very excited when I saw the thread. I was thinking you weren't going to finish it in January, as it says on your webpage.

Hey this is excellent! I'm really glad I tried it

The graphics are beautifully drawn and the explosion animations are fantastic! I really like the idea of the enemies stealing your bases, you having to shoot them to get them back and then catching them so they don't break, I haven't played a game liek that before, very nicely done

thanks for the feedback.
I have just uploaded a new file with many fixes.
loading time is now cut in half.
keys are now in instructions and the above post, but you can always select your own.

@Kangaroo2 BETA2:
defender was the first game to implement this mechanic, although I dont think I've seen it utilized in "vertical" shooters.

Quote: "Ew...sorry, its just way too hard!!!!"

I guess I'm used to it, cant see it anymore!
try enabling easy mode (which I will consider to be default - easy mode cuts the enemy bullet frequency in half),
and remember to use the shield very often!
you cannot survive without using the shield. charge it up by shooting some more baddies, then use it again, but dont get cornered!
also, try to use the recoil of your ship to your advantage. when shooting, the ship thrusts backwards, its almost as if you had a "down" button. use this fact to avoid bullets.

here are some tips on how to start level 1 (taken from the instructions)

start:
Move to the right, and attack the five birds that appear on the right side of the screen. Be quick. As they are of the same type, you will get a weapon upgrade. Do not move to the left! Wait for the group on the left to come to the right, and dispose of them also. They are also 5 in number, so you will be able to upgrade your weapon to the third level! Do not shoot at the shields!, your bullets will only bounce back to you. Now you are ready as can be for the main frontal attack that begins with the main musical theme.

thanks for the nice words,
waiting for your highscores!

aristides.

Great game!

Takes a few goes to get used to things but it's well worth it. Graphics are silky smooth on my PC (Athlon XP 2000, Geforce4 Ti4600, 512MB, XP Home Sp2). No sign of jerkiness at all, even with zillions of explosions going on.

After a few games my high score is 18593 but I will have a proper go tonight. I'm supposed to be working at the moment.

Area that needs a bit of tweaking is the entering of high score name - seems to be a bit iffy at times and it does not always echo typed letter immediately - would like better maybe with a flashing cursor to let you know you are actually entering a name.

Other VERY minor glitch is when you change easy option to on, the width of the menu shrinks (presumably difference in width of word 'on' to 'off).

You should also consider encrypting high score tables and introducing a net-driven global high score system as well. People will play more if they can see scores by other people to beat.

As I said, I will have a proper playing sessions tonight and report back with any bugs I find.

Boo!

thanks I appreciate the feedback.

a proper highscore is over 35000 for level 1, so keep at it!

I know highscore entering is iffy, will see what I'll do about it.

the global highscore thing is a beautiful idea, but I dont know how to go about it! if there's any info on this, please share, I'll gladly do it if it's doable!

thanks again,
aristides.

p.s. just uploaded a new version, its 16.5megs instead of 20, and has quite a few fixes. its also easier..
