I got my box running dual boot, WinXP and Linux Mandrake 10.2
WinXP connects to the net over ASDL just fine but I can't configure Linux to connect over ADSL.
Any help? (perhaps from someone who has Mandrake 10.2 connected through ADSL)

Thanks in edvance!

Hrmm, that is not very helpful Ali M...

Infinity, If Mandrake uses KDE, then it should of come with a program with "PPoE" in the title... I've never used it, but I'm sure I've seen it on other linux distros, so if Mandrake uses KDE, it should have it too =) I can't really give much more advice, as I havent used it, and I'm not the best with linux...

Yeah, it has some wizards, but they don't quite work for me as it still won't connect.
btw. It's pppoe as far as I know.
And yeah, it uses KDE

usb or network connection?, network is almost always automatic under Linux, hell, Suse starts downloading patches before it`s finished installing, even tiny little distros like Puppy find the Inet connection automaticaly, maybe your card is something weird OR you have a USB modem, in that case you maybe need specialist drivers to get it to go.

If your ADSL modem connects to your PC via a USB cable then you are going to have problems under Linux as it needs the right drivers to work (and they may not be available at all).

To connect a Linux PC to the net the easy way, you need an ADSL modem or router which connects to the PC via a normal network (ethernet) connection.

I have ethernet modem and I'm now on Linux!
The problem was firewall and root.
I managed to connect to internet (with linux) this morning. The thing is (in case you're interested) that you need to setup network with firewall off, and always connect logged in as root, then end the session and log in as yourself. So I somehow figured it and do that every time.
If someone knows how to get around this please say...

Edit:In order not to start a new thread, I'll ask this here:
It seems to me that firefox I have here (on linux partition/disc) eighter doesn't suport CSS (what I doubt) or I have many, many fonts missing.
Or it's the matter of firefox setup.
If someone knows what's the issue here...

I havent ever used Mandrake cos it`s one of those distros that makes things hard for non paying customers (try finding a download site for eg), under Suse10 I just install and go, the only problem I had was with the firewall blocking the XP network by default, that was easily fixed from Yast, have you tried altering the exceptions for the firewall?, since I am a winderz convert I tend to get lost when I have to stray too far from the GUI so I can`t tell you what you would need to do with IPTables or whatever directly (but I`m learning).

I don't know much about linux eighter, and I'm still learning too.
I know linux has firewall, but I don't know how to configure it, turn it on and off, view stats etc. except as root, anybody knows that?

you have to be root to make system changes like that unless you alter the users permissions (from root..make em a privilidged user), it`s one of the things that makes Linux more secure than windows (that and software that isn`t always prone to buffer exploits, don`t MS ever think to check for buffer overflows?)

if you want to connect then find the connection device for your distro and then as root from the console you do chmod 777 I think, look it up, you just need to give it permision for anyone to read/write and use it (afaik)

http://www.perlfect.com/articles/chmod.shtml

here, this might help, or you might be able to add users to the connection from some config tool like Suse`s YAST.
