The 'R' means they've already been paid for and he's yet to add the icon and link. Highlight the reserved pixels to see a tooltip explaining this.

Either *now* means "the last few months", or you are only just hearing about it. It was old news about 2 or 3 months ago here. He was on TV and everything.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I think that for $160,000 its still not bad value.

This guy gets between 250,000 and 500,000 unique vistors a day. Thats HUGE. Say, maybe 1% of them click on that link (if properly designed to catch the eye, maybe more!), thats between 2500 an 5000 more unique visitors to your site every day. It depends on what the site does. You might make 20ยข, you might make $20 - whatever it is, it'll get money back. If it makes $1 per visitor on average, it should take no longer than 2 months to get your money back and enter profit. If you're an online gambling site, you'll probably make more than $1 per visitor!

EDIT: He has had 3.2million unique visitors since christmas eve!

That's IF it catches their eye. I can definitely see it being worthy if your ad stands out, but for 95% of the links there, you wouldn't click on them unless you just wanted to randomly browse the net (which I'm assuming some people do).

Am I the only person who finds it funny that some guy with an ebay ID of "user48638" has $140,300.00 to throw around?

It...just...seems...odd. You know, b/c user48638 is NOT a very creative name, it's extremely generic. And if this person is extremely generic and unimaginitive as their name implies, how does a lucky #$#@%$#@ like that get all their dough?

Perhaps I should sell cool ebay IDs for a thousand bucks a pop. I bet that guy would buy a few.

I would really like to know how you know this? Are you just told by someone else or is this first hand knowledge? I'm just curious because it seems absurd that anyone can know this for certain.

Try it and tell us if it worked out. I don't think it's such a bad idea. In fact, I heard that people sell email accounts that have good names. So your idea isn't far off.

This guy gets LOADS of media coverage (just read his blog and look at the 'press' page), right from day one he was writing press releases and contacting journalists. This guy knows what he's doing and it's working. Stop being so cynical.

One proof that he was getting lots of traffic is that not long after his site was launched, he went over his bandwidth limit. You couldn't access the page for about 2 days. You could always ask the people who are hosting him how much bandwidth he's using and how many page views he gets.

Like Exeat said, the mere fact that we are here discussing it shows that it must be popular.

Yep, some people were doubting the million dollar webpage at School. During Computer science class, some of us had finished our work early (linked lists, so all the..not so well of kids were struggling), and we were just standing around talking. I brought up the milliondollar homepage, and someone doubted that the idea would work, and almost immediatly after i had brought up the topic, we all went to the back logged on and checked out the site. Thats when a one guy said "THere is no way this works, how the H*ll does he get so many visitors, and i reply word of mouth. He still doesn't belive me, so the girl next to him shuts him up by saying, your viewing it right now arn't you, heck we all are.

Just thought i'd share.

Looks like the auction only went for $38,000. All those guys bidding over $100,000 backed out. Look at the bid history. Some people bid over $25,000,000 just to be stupid.

Ha, also notice that half of the people bidding on the item JUST made an account. user509234 I think was originally named "TheUSGovernment", but obviously was renamed by ebays version of a mod. So if you see user+number, it isn't a chosen name, it is a rename.

If anything, this shows how EBAY sucks, more people are fake bidders that get disqualified at the last min, so if anyone SERIOUSLY wants to buy something, they have to pay more. I say that you should be forced to pay a .01% tax for bidding, or something.

I know those figures because I read some of his blog where he told some of the figures. I also got bored and looked up his site on alexa.com...

Hi,

All your replies are entertaining. Hope is a good sell. I can't convince any of you that this is all just a scam, even when I know better. You're all so convinced of how right you are that you refuse any and all facts to the contrary. This is very clever con that was started by click bots and perpetuated by embeciles who payed for the pixels. And beleived in by the apathetic masses who don't care one way or another.

Hope is a valuable thing, but I won't let it make me poor.

Looks like someone's jealous that they didn't think of it themselves and has resorted to poorly spelt insults. You also need to look up the meaning of the word 'hope', because you're way off the mark, yet again.
