You can use any image you like.

Or do you mean is animation automatic ? If so, the user controls the animation at this point.

I guess I'd have to write my own animated sprite particle emitter. For things like smoke.

You would, as there's no built in particle ( behavior/animation ) system embedded into the sprite commands at this point. It's something we've discussed, but are yet to implement. Mainly as it's dependent upon the sprite hierarchy controls. Which we want to further improve first. This should allow particle sprites (or any sprite) to be attached to a parent. Effectively making it set and forget.
