Hi all,
Just looking for a bit of advice really. I've wasted my money on trying to collect things over the past few years (still got a load of old beer mats if anyone's interested ) until a few months ago I wandered into a little 2nd hand games shop and decided, on a whim, to buy a japanese N64 racing game. I took it home and placed it next to all my other games and realised that I've been collecting videogames for years now without even realising it.

Unfortunately most of the older games were traded in when I was too young to realise what I was doing. Now I really want to start collecting videogames proper, but there's so many of the things I don't know where to start.

For the time being I'd like to be able to play what I buy, and I'm not too concerned about them being in mint condition. I just can't decide what to do, I like the idea of buying an old snes from somewhere but I also wouldn't mind a psx.

If I got a snes I would 'hopefully' be able to pick up games dirt cheap, and I'd be able to play some of the classics, as they were meant to be played (because I'd never dream of using an emulator

)

But, if I got a psx I'd be able to choose games that I know would be fun to play (still got a load of old psx mags lying around).

Maybe I've got it all wrong and I should go for something like a zx spectrum to really get the retro vibe flowing (there's one in the garage but one of the leads is missing ) Or maybe a dreamcast before people decide they're collectors items and I can't afford one.

Maybe I should go even further forward and get a gamecube or xbox while there's still plenty of games to choose from and I won't be laughed out of the room when I tell my mates what I've just bought!!!

If there's anyone out there who can offer a bit of advice I'd be more than grateful. Thanks in advance.

p.s. I'm in the UK so, for now at least, I'll be sticking to PAL.

I'd buy the old retro systems, stock up on tons of good games that did come out for them (Contra, Mario Bros, Duck Hunt) and leave those all organised together. From then, I'd probably collect Neo Geos, to other classic handhelds, as they probably will gain value some day. Nextly, after content from collecting those. Go for the Xbox and Gamecubes and other crap like that. All depends on you. Then, when 360 gets all the glitches out and price drops, buy one, and start a new next gen game collection. That's what I would reccomend.

i like the old retro games. The past year, I started buying sega, snes, and last week an nes. the big problem is finding games i want. super metroid is one. contra is another. There's another game with cavemen on NES, but I can't recall the title. It was like track n' field with cavemen, and in one event you had to see who could toss their gf that furthest.

I know how you feel. Today I shelled out $55 for a Sega Genesis & Sega CD with around 10 games (Night Trap, Sewer Shark, Chuck Rock 2, etc.).

I just love collecting retro game systems, and I can't stop. I have drawers in my dresser designated to housing cartridges and systems. Even my car trunk has an old Atari 2600 with 20 games. I think I need help

I like the little Spectrum games. I'd like all of the ULTIMATE games like Atic Atac, and Sabre Wolf. Probably be worth something one day.

It depends on what your going for I think. I mean, if you love playing properly designed and playable games - you should really buy a gamecube and start collecting games for that, they're often very cheap. Games like Monkeyball, Pikmin, Zelda, and the Mario party games should be very collectable in future.

Notice though, how things like second hand NES consoles are getting a lot more expensive, Retro gaming is getting bigger, and the game stores are cashing in.

Personally - I'd avoid the tape based games - purely because they're going to rot.
Hardware might last a bit longer - cartridges etc. Of course you could be doing history a favour by collecting and backing up the older tape based games before they're all gone, but I think there's a museum trying to do that already.

Well they might eventually not work that's true. I think that they are fine just as a sculpture type image in a case or something.

I read somewhere the life expectency of magnetic media is about 20 years. I think its time to check my C+4 games that are stowed in my damp cold loft

If you want to play with them and have fun, don't worry bout the condition or if they are boxed. Howver if you want them to be REALLY worth anything in the future, make sure they are boxed and mint, preferably nt openned and DON'T open them.

Personally I love collecting retro stuff, and mostly do it to own all the old games and system I used to really want as a kid but couldn't afford

The most collectible systems that still have games that are playable by modern standards are probably the NeoGeo and Saturn - however the most collectible games on there can cost a LOT of money. Ie Radiant Silvergun or Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Saturn are two of the best games EVER but will set you back at least 70pounbs, 150+ if mint. NeoGeo cartriges such as Metal Slug or King of Fighter s series will also set you back a lot, I have seen some of them reach 300pounds each on ebay.

Much older systems such as Atari vcs, Spectrum etc are very collectable but quite cheap to pick up most games for as they were very common at the time, millions of copies sold. Some of the arguably cooler systems to collect from that era are far more expensive though due to their rarity (I liked the Vectrex for example)

I have over 400 spectrum and commodore tapes, I'd say only 5% of them actually work anymore, they just don't last. However they are fun to collect and mean that its legal then for you to donwload the game rom and play them on an emulator, so you can still kindof play thm

If you simply want to be able to buy hundreds of good quality games for very little money, then ps1 games are probably the way to go, most of them are worth peanuts nowadays. I'm sure ps2 gc and xbox games will go along the same lines soon once the new consoles get in full swing, I've already noticed many of them coming down to silly money alread (I recently bough Max Payne, Burnout, Splinter Cell and Halo for xbox for 1.99 each!)

If you are worried about magnetic cassette media then you can always plug the cassette deck into the audio in of your sound card and store the data off as wavs (no compression, lossless, hq) and in time transfer them to other cassettes.

Theres emulators out there that let you load from a cassette deck plugged into your audio out too, which is pretty cool xD

I remember my old speccy emulator on the Atari ST, to get a new game on it you had to sample it then convert it - that's where most of the roms you'd download originated, at some point every speccy rom had to be loaded into a computer for conversion.

I really like playing old speccy games again though, gives you the chance to complete the games that foiled you as a kid - I only completed Manic Miner, Head over Heels, SkoolDaze, Back to Skool, and Encounter on emulators with the help of an any-point save.

For me and my brother, it's an absolute disease (that's been wearing off slightly)...

I think last tally put it at over 20 individual types of consoles (not including duplicate DCs and such :p), and probably well over 250 games. The prizes of our collection are a DC Katana and Atari Lynx dev kits. We've also had a lot of fun collecting powergloves, unopened versions of games like Vagrant Story, Soul Calibur, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (DC), the Super Scope 6, and some of the less popular consoles (NUON, 3D0, etc.). I personal enjoy the older consoles, and am looking into getting most of the old school Atari stuff.

The funnest part is playing the games. If you can get an unopened version, that's great...but try and get an opened version too! Games were meant to be enjoyed =)

Yeah, I had all the originals. Look in a charity shop in north wales. That and a rubber keyboard spectrum and a 128 speccy, plus a couple of hundred games, all for about £25 apparently. Nice of my parents not to ask me anything at all when they cleaned out the attic and ****ed off to Cyprus. Oh and a 1mb (top stuff) Atari ST with loads of games should be there too (not counting consoles etc). Weep.....

Cheers

@Jeku - The NUON was released quite a while ago, although you won't find it in stores anymore. There was no set "NUON console", but you had to find a DVD player with NUON functionality. I can't remember the exact release date, but it was back when DVDs costed, like, $40 a crack. Some of the games released include Tempest 3000, Iron Soldier 3 (very rare), and Merlin Racing.

http://www.staticgamer.com/gallery/

In particular, you will find the following photos of interest:

Samsung Extiva, N2000
Notice in the left corner of the top box there is the small NUON logo.

NUON Games
Sadly, this is the majority of the games released for NUON during its short lifespan.

There's also pics of the Toshiba machine. If I remember correctly, we possess the Samsung, but don't quote me on that. It's a nice little system, but unfortunately, I haven't loaded up Tempest 3000 on it yet. It had a LOT of potential (particularly since it was riding the DVD wave), but sadly, VM Labs didn't capitalize.

I have Need For Speed on My 3DO, that guy is annoying, but the game is great. Still one of the best car physics I reckon. If I were making a driving game, I would use it as a comparison to get the feel that I want.

Can anyone tell me who that annoying guy is in Need For Speed? Is he Don Mattrick?

Is that the very first fifa? Thats the only fifa I ever liked - I had the megadrive and pc-cdrom version, I figure the 3do version was similar/identical to the pc version? IE still 2d iso but with a video intro and cd-rom commentary

I have Fifa still as well. Space Hulk, and a few others. The 3DO dissapeared too soon. I was still looking for games, and I had a PS1. I thought they were pretty equal really.

got 60/300 for sms.
and probably 20 for mega drive.

if you know where you can probably pick up the games really cheap, i managed to pick up 30 odd sms games back in nov for a pound each and in really good condition.

I think it was the very first version of Fifa, as the title was just Fifa Soccer as opposed to Fifa '95 or something like that. Road Rash, however, was the first game I played and fell for on the 3DO. They had it setup in West Edmonton Mall when it first came out, with a whopping price tag of $700. After much begging and pleading my sane parents of course didn't give in.

My buddy, on the other hand, got it for his birthday that year. Rich and lucky I had a Turbo-Grafx 16 and didn't like it that much, so we traded systems a few years later and now I have a 3DO A few years back I went eBay crazy and got almost 20 games for the system. I also have some Sampler discs with cartoons on them and what-not. Pretty nifty

*sigh* If only 7th Guest was released on the 3DO, then it would be the perfect system

EDIT:

Anyone else remember the original Need for Speed being called Car and Driver Presents: The Need for Speed ?

If it was, it is well hidden as I can't find it on any sites. I saw it on Philips CD-I system and of course PC, but that's it. Sad, really, as it's my favourite FMV game of all time.
