Hi all,

In next months newsletter we've got an interview with a famous artist who has created artwork for games such as the Unreal series and Brothers in Arms. We've got a few questions lined-up for him obviously, but figured why not open this out to the forum. If you have any questions you'd like to ask him (sensible, game/gaming/industry related ones) then post them here. I'll pick the best and include them in the interview piece.

Cheers,

Rich
PS - He's coding his own retro RPG styled game in DBPro incase you're wondering what the TGC

If you could change one thing about the professional game industry today, what would it be?

do you listen to music whilst you are working, if so what is your favourite type of music and favourite band?

and the "beer or coke" question is a valid one - it is an important issue

- How do you feel about the direction the Unreal series has gone/is going? What started as a single-player experience has turned into a full-blown multiplayer fare ala Quake.

- What was it like working with the team at Epic, some of whom were responsible for a big majority of the shareware game boom back in the early 90's? (Epic Pinball, Jill of the Jungle, Jazz Jackrabbit, OMF 2097, etc.)

hmm. I would like to ask if you started as a visual artist off of the computer before you learned how to create art ON the computer. Im in that boat right now.

Do you use a USB drawing tablet? if so what kind?

What is your opinion on Chuck Norris?

What are the main differences in how you prepare media professionally, and preparing media for DBPro?

What games (if any) inspired you to become an artist, or did you find this profession by accident?

If you had to choose just 1 game and 1 application to take onto a desert island with you, what would they be?

Do you feel that artwork is slowly becomming far more of a focus to how good people feel the game will be rather than focus on playability?

What are your opinions on the ever increasing 'License' games that seem to be lacking in originality?

Are you excited about the "Next-Generation" (technically current) consoles, like the X-Box 360... if so which aspect do you feel is the most exciting?

Personally I've found this new generation of consoles are almost identical to work with as the previous generation. Just more horsepower to play with, so from my pov worlds can become closer to what artists and coders really want. This said, most companies are being pressured to take advantage of aspects when it really isn't necessary. Sometimes a simple fun game is all anyone wants or needs; but that often isn't enough now. Sad really. Just my opinion though.

What were some important decisions about art direction in games like Brothers in Arms that helped unify themes and moods with music and the plot/situation?

Is being an artist 'learned' or is it a talent? and what weighs more, the talent or the tools?

You've worked in both a team and solo developing environment. What do you find to be easier to work in, and what pros/cons do you notice with each environment?

What is your opinion on the future of artistic "collision courses" ala Kingdom Hearts where we see disney's art style come together with a more eastern anime with Final Fantasy chatacters and the combination of both with the main character, Sora?

Do you scribble down whatever you want and go from there when drawing. Or do you carefully plan down what you're going to draw, then draw it?

Do you think anyone can make good graphics if they concentrate - or is it only an inborn talent which only some possess?

Thank-you

How easy was it for you to enter the industry you are currently in now? And what advice would you give somebody who wants to make it in the industry today?
