I'm starting to make a 2d retro sidescroller about a detective, travelling a large world with LOADS of countries, cities/towns and locations in each city/town, based on the Master System text adventure game "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?". The only problem I am having so far are the names of:

1. the game itself!
2. the main character (the detective)

anyone have any ideas? if yours is chosen, your name will be in the credits (with your permission!)

oh, also, any tips on smooth sprite animation, using MS paint to draw the character? I don't have any money whatsoever so i cannot upgrade to paintshop pro, for example.

and also, scrolling background! (so, more probs than i thought!)
EVERY bit of help, no matter how small will be appreciated! thanks!

in the meantime, try this very small, impossible to complete game.

Try search in the code snippets or 20liners for "what to name your kid". Or "name".

I'll be using it in my game

For the sprites try using graphics gale at

its free and really good, you set it up as frames to see the animaton of the sprite.

I like
Lance Dakota as a name for the detective

IF there is a spy type dude, call him John Smith. (That wouldn't be his real name)

the game is about a detective that needs to travel the world to crack a criminal gang and bring them to justice in their own countries. they have stolen hundreds of goods, you need to retrun them to their owners. this is huge, i'll provide more info when i think of it.

why don't you download namemage from mapmage.com
it's a free program geared toward dnd players, but i'm sure you can use it for your game. and for graphics, try anim8or at anim8or.com.

thanks devastation, your name suggestion for the detective will almost certainly be used, I'll think about the game name but it sounds good. suggestions are only to be taken up until this saturday 4th Feb, so keep 'em coming! can you beat "Killing Time, starring Detective Rusty Pipes"?

What's the secret number!!! Oh yeah, and there's a bug: if you press enter without entering a number, the 'g' in "guess" disappears.

Has anyone actually played "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?"? I recently picked it up in a sale at a games store for £1.99 in a buy one get one free sale.

Suggestions for the name of the main character are no longer being taken. Thanks guys for all your help. The game still needs a name but the main character will be called Det. Rusty Pipes. I'm already thinking of doing a crappy little spin-off cartoon series as well, but we shall see how the game goes.

humanbalance.net (graphics gale) is really good for sprite animation, i would recommend it to anyone, although I haven't started to make any animations yet with it! This is because I have been wondering abouth whether to do the game first and then a cartoon series after, but last night I decided that the game will be on hold for a while, so I can make a start on a simple short series of cartoons: "The Rusty Pipes Story". I'll keep you posted on how it goes, in a different thread. By the way, if i made the cartoon and saved the final exe as an avi file, will it run in windows media player, since saving exes as .scr work as screensavers? If so, can such avi's be burned onto a dvd to play on a regular dvd player?
