Well, I was playin me some WoW when all the sudden, my computer restarted. Well, thats odd I thought. When it finished rebooting, I got a message that windows had just recovered from a serious error! Well, thats probably not good I thought. I read the error page

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=fe543827-9770-4f7e-a13c-fd43f46bd3ac&SID=11

And my thoughts were confirmed. I dont want to dumb down my graphics card, but anyone have any ideas how to fix this/what caused that problem? Never happend before....I just installed new windows updates last night. Heres my GFX Card...

Any ideas?

ya... i had this happen about 2 years ago... mine ended up being a virus and i had to wipe the system clean. but, i don't know about your problem. it could be something different... a good tip would be to backup stuff(especially DBP projects ) just in case

This happens to me occasionally too!!!
Like sometimes when I play Battlefront, it restarts, shows a blue screen about a serious error.
I don't know how to fix this
I just uninstalled the game
And I don't use my folder on my computer anymore just to be safe.
I use my 512mb USB port flash drive.. although it is hard keeping everything on it >_< (except music, etc).
I got better virus protection since then, and upgraded my firewall.
but every now and then my computer silently restarts with no error message or anything. Maybe it's just the video card over heating?
I really need help too.

Might be your 3d card overheating, have you got cooling devices inside your case?

Might be the windows update too, I don't trust their untested and poorly made updates. My brothers computer is doing the same thing since he accidently had automatic update on, although there's a ton of junk on his computer so that might be the cause of it too...

If you're processor is dual core then that may be it, I've heard there were a few problems with them, maybe you need to update your motherboard drivers?

But yer, check your 3d card isn't overheating first. I think there are programs that can do this for you, I wouldn't recommend my method which is taking the case off and sticking my hand under the graphics card ow...

Try downloading the latest graphic drivers for the card, also make sure your direct x is up to date.

WOW is a life sucking virus...
And is also a computer killing virus.

This is actually kinda strange, after installing the latest patch (well the patch a month ago), I ran WoW and then suddently my computer turns off... I turn it back on and what do you know, my hard drive got curropted. Nice. Beyond that, I couldn't reformat the drive, I forgot what the error was but it refused to reformat.

That was probably implemented virus , Viruses get from simple ones , who just make files in purpoise of advertising or so , to the viruses that delete files and ruin you`r windows to the viruses that delete the hard disk unstopable , to the viruses that make you`r pc running at such high frequences that it burns out . (not really much of a flame , but many parts just burn out of heat-stop working...)

Now i`m not sure what happend with you , but many viruses out there controll windows restarting , shut downing , and file deleting (windowses) throo kernel`s32 functions , they just need to call kernell32 reboot function and it`l reboot...

If this error continiues on your computer , or if something odd happens , you should do a FULL format of your computer .

(it`s VERY possible that i`m talking about some different thing here...)

It's not a virus, it's caused by a driver.

Even though it says it is caused by your video card, it's is just as likely to be caused by something else e.g. sound card.

Try these, in order:

1). Take off the side of your case and blow air into it using a desktop fan

2). Upgrade every single driver you have installed on your pc.

3). Remove your sound card

4). Remove any other cards (deactivate onboard hardware in bios)

If this doesn't work then you will have to underclock your computer.

I used to have a problem like this, and it seemed to be that something was overwriting my graphic card drivers. It could be a virus, or something that shares the same memory as your graphic card, like a sound card...Or bad memory sectors. Anyhow, I could fix the problem by just removing my graphic card drivers completely, then reboot with the onboard VGA (If you have it) Then reinstall the drivers, and reboot again. That worked for me. I have the Nvidea 5200. It stopped happening after awhile, can't remember what fixed it completely.

yeah, always do that first, or use some compressed air...

sometimes it's just some accumulated dust in there...

Yes I have had this problem before.

Infact it completely broke my laptop and I never got it working again.

Might want to reboot your entire system or virus scan.

I doubt its a virus too - JohnY's advice is sound (no pub intended). You could try a program like MBM or SpeedFan to keep an eye on the CPU temperature.

I had an issue similar a while back after a windows "update". Windows was certainly more secure, I couldn't get on the internet for more than 10 seconds before a blue screen. That'll teach me for using a windows driver...

Everyone has their stories, but that sounds more like a driver or heat problem.

Is your computer hidden neatly away in a cupboard-type section of a desk, or is it fully open to the environment? Is it next to a radiator?

Whats the full spec?

NEVER install updates from Windows Update.
Run a spyware check before and after, see what I mean?
With a driver update for my 5200, I got:

14 viruses
87 pieces of spyware
4 trojans

and a big headache trying to remove them.

I have the exact same error on one of my desktops. After major looking into it I found that the only workaround seemed to be to turn the hardware acceleration off and turning a "Write enable" option off (on the same advanced graphics tab). Bit of a bummer of a fix, and didn't work for me at all. Found a fair few other "fixes", but nothing did it. Interestingly it always seems to be with Radeon cards (mine is a 9800pro), and I'm basically landed at the idea that either I format the drive (quite a few googles show this amazingly didn't fix things), or upgrade the BIOS (which is a git because I need a new floppy drive, and there doesn't seem to be another way to upgrade the BIOS).

I haven't had it breakdown in games yet (although I mainly use my laptop for games nowadays), but it *always* happens in iTunes when I try to add album art to an MP3. BSD straight off. Or if I try to view an MP4 in QuickTime I get the same BSD error. Annoying. Luckily I have a few other PCs, so no major thing.

Anyway, I found that replacing the graphics card (new=ATI old=NVidia) with the old one made no difference. This included the latest DirectX and iTunes/QuickTime software, plus the latest drivers for the graphics card in question. Also tried swapping out memory modules (one suspect found online).

Bloody annoying basically. So if you fix it tell me what you did as I don't feel like formatting and most reports online say it doesn't fix this bug. May be too hot, but will BSD with the same test straight after boot up after being off for several days. Plus I have a 650w power supply with 3 fans which should supply enough power/ cool surely?

Hmmm, sound card you say? May have to try that one.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I don't get why people make viruses
They screw up everybody's lives.
I got some stupid Log in thing to go to some site "MadMan - Kick A**" , some hokie trying to steal passwords.
All I've done today is played Guild Wars, I programmed for a bit, and then I went looking for 3D tutorials and downloaded Psionic's free dwarf model. Did I get the blasted hokie thinger from there?
>_<;
Although, my parents didn't know enough to get virus protection until I realized we didn't have it last june.
Maybe an old virus from like forever ago...
I don't understand how people hack computers, could my computer be hacked as easily as people make you think?
And do you think I'm safe enough to not have to use a 512mb USB port drive all the time?
Bush Baby,

This may be more relevant to Bush Baby or Dazzag than RPGamer, but worth looking at, anyway. Have you checked for an IRQ conflict on your graphics card? i.e. are any other devices using the same IRQ? If so, then make sure your GFX card is the only device using it's IRQ. This caused me all sorts of screen lockups & problems until I solved it. The IRQs can be set to 'float' for each boot, so it may be worthwhile looking to lock them down, in BIOS - along with the other BIOS tweaks reported.

Good luck.

I have an XP3000+, 1.5gb DDR333, a 6600GT and I'm programming 3k text-based exe's?!

this stuff happens to me all the time, I let it reboat and continue, and it doesn't do it again with the same error code. Just let your computer go and do it's thing, when it stops working, then you have a problem-Really?

Yeah, I agree with most people; probably a driver issue.

I remember when I got my new video card and everytime I went into a graphically draining game (not even that, although it was fine with DBP games), my computer mysteriously rebooted about 30 seconds to 1 minute into the game. Ends up I forgot to give the card it's own power source!

Power could be an issue - if you're running a 6800GT, 2500+ AMD and lots of Cold Cathodes and hard disks... on a 250W PSU...
