Don't even think about it, it's too painful for words!

Oh and no, there won't be DB for OS X, sorry. It's built on-top of DirectX. So unless Microsoft release that for OS X (yeah, right) there is little hope of ever porting it, sorry.

Too much, too soon, too far to go, too late to play

Hey guys,

The new MacBook pro is certainly one sexay piece of kit, if a little on the pricey side. I just wondered which Mac you would recommend i get. I am hoping to use the Ilife software, maybe do some 3D modelling on it, some web design, and browsing the interent and genral homework stuff. Would a mac mini or eMac be sufficient or should i save up and invest in an iMac g5 or maybe even one of the new intel machines?

Any feedback would really be appreciated, especially from current Mac owners,

Mike

So I was thinking, it would probably KILL MS' sales in windows if they released DX for Unix systems :p every gamer would port

Yeah - i knew there would/could never be a port, however I was wondering how it plays under emulation... Especially now its Intel based. I know the OS itself is completely different in everyway... See, I've heard that vista will emulate OpenGL using DX - so can DX not be emulated using OpenGL?

I've honestly wondered why it's been so hard for such a large group of talented coders, to actually emulate DX properly.

and i've wondered that exact same thing. Why don't they just have a bunch of OGL libraries that imitate the DX libraries and make the apps think that they're DX and use them?
but then again, i haven't done any research on such a thing, only thought about it.

I guess with the Intel macs the best bet might be wine instead of emulation.

That would take years and years. How many people do you think wrote DX in the first place? Imitating it correctly with all the little bugs would be a massive task. Not to mention opengl doesn't do half the stuff DX does.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

nicolas, make a disk image of your cdrom/dvd diablo and mount that when required, this way you get hard drive loading times between areas and save power if your playing via the battery without mains power.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Does this disc mounting thing only work with certain cdrom/dvd's?

I ask because I've just tried it with Civ 3 Complete and when I mount the .dmg file I'm presented with the same screen as if I'd just inserted the dvd (drag to apps folder to install etc) if I click on the Civ 3 icon (without dragging to apps folder) I'm asked to insert the disk.

p.s. I didn't experiment with the settings in Disk Utility so it's possible I missed something.

making a disc image should be pretty straight forward for any application / game utility etc.
theres a few good tutes on the web from command line to drag and drop procedures.
