40% of people in the whole world use it? I'd seriously doubt that Something like half the worlds populous don't even live in "developed" countries, let alone know what a computer is (never mind how to use one!)

For personal use GMAIL certainly rules the roost. It's because they used the very clever advertising strategy of invitations (it was no doubt copied by/from other people, but its still a great idea). It makes the whole thing seem exclusive.

You recieve an invite, you invite your friends, they invite theirs and so on and so forth until even your grandmother who still owns a PC running windows 95 has gmail.

Maybe. But even that is misleading. I mean my main accounts are my ISP one (25gb of backup storage apparently) and my work one. But I do have a hotmail one (my dad loves messenger and it works well with him, and just overcomplicates to communicate via a different system with him), a yahoo one (just to see what it was like; haven't really used it in ages), and a gmail one. Tend to use the yahoo and gmail one to setup accounts at sites I may not want to spam me in on my main accounts, but must admit Gmail is probably my fave online one. But even though I count in the 40%, I also use several others. So 40% of computer users may use gmail, but I bet the stats are similar (or even better) for other big ones, such as hotmail or yahoo. ie. it doesn't all add up to 100%, so 40% is not so impressive. 40% of all computer users use it as their *main* email account would be more impressive.

Is it still in beta BTW? I mean isn't it like almost 2 years old now?

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I heard somewhere a while back that gmail wasn't actually allowed to be called gmail because some other company had registered the name a while back (some court case or something)...so gmail is going to change it's name...Something like that, can't remember exactly. Anyone else heard of this?

Robin

edit:
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/internet/0,39020369,39218121,00.htm

also wrt to 40% of internet users having a gmail account...well I reckon the number of people who have a gmail account and actually use it is much less. I think i'm like many who signed up for gmail when I got an invite but I don't actually use it.

new gmail accounts end in @googlemail.com not @gmails.com so you could be right there...

And that would be your fault

I was one of the early adopters who resorted to buying an account off eBay for $5. Sad, isn't it.
