There is a law against damaging a person/companies reputation at large, be it facts or not. A magazine could publish an article claiming Tom Cruise is gay, if he lost certain movie parts because of this then he could quite easily win a lawsuit against the magazine, wether it's true or not. The point is, it doesn't matter if it's a fact or not.
