Hi all,

Have seen a few posts about the GP2X on here so figured I'd let you all know that mine arrived a few days ago. It has the latest firmware, which irons out a load of the issues that bothered me previously. I stuck a 1GB SD into it and it picked up the contents no worries, they supplied a USB SD card reader/writer with it, but it only works on my PC so I'll need a new one to get files off my Mac onto it without booting my PC, but otherwise it works nicely.

I copied around 140MB of Atari ST games onto the card + an ST emulator OutcaST and they appeared under the 'games' icon when the GP has booted. Works really nicely too! because you've only got a d-pad some games are out (things that require hefy mouse or keyboard work for example), and others were just too much for OutcaST to cope with, but on the whole the experience was quite neat - a cute little ST in the palm of my hands

I tried a few MP3s as well, and they played back just fine. Not yet tried any videos, or other software actually, but the MAME port is supposed to be great so that will be next.

It feels nice, there is a d-pad, four main buttons and two shoulder buttons. Ports include a mini-D USB, the SD slot and there is the option to connect it to a TV directly which is quite cool. The screen is bright, but the refresh rate isn't all that hot, making scrolling text in games unreadable, but the game graphics themselves look smart. Volume is ok, quite crisp, better through headphones than the units speakers. Takes 2 AA batteries or a DC in, they have lasted a good amount of time so far (not changed them yet).

Will post some more stuff as I explore further, but I only ever really wanted it for the emulation side of life -- beyond that I would wager it's virtually useless. Sure they may release a few commercial games, but so what? If you really wanted to play hot handheld games you'd own a DS or a PSP anyway. This is more of a geek toy than anything.

Cheers,

Rich

ohhh, wouldn't want to do that
mmm i want a new mac...

those look nice... if i were to buy a handheld for it's extra features (MP3, Video, emulation) i would grab one of those, rather than a PSP.

what's the size like? The size of the PSP really turned me off. It just seems too bulky to be a convient MP3 player or anything.

screen size big enough? clear? has it got a sharp image? just wondering

i was reading about the screen, they plan to improve it with a new firmware somewhere down the road. it's a little bit interlaced. other than that, it's fine

Ah, you've joined us Rich, allow me to welcome you May have a few gp2x related presents for you later down the line, Mike knows what one of them are.

As for the other, i've been having barrels of fun developing for this thing. By popular request I started work on a triple triad game and i've been blown away by how much support people have been giving me. I wake up to find pm's on IRC saying words of encouragment or well dones for current progress, its really nice

The screen you can sort out manually now using the cpu-lcd tweaking utility on the gp2x archive. Must have util, allows you to a) over clock the main cpu (i run at around 266mhz most of the time, makes a noticiable difference for emulation i can tell you!) and also lets you tweak the lcd timings to remove that flicker and get a crystal clear picture.

I havnt had a chance to try out the st emulator yet but I fully intend to - the genesis emulator (megadrive for us europeans) is perfect and Squidge's snes emulator is coming along in leaps and bounds. Theres lots of exciting projects coming this way and look out for some rather special commercial ports in the future

sd cards exist with wifi adaptors built in. the drivers would have to be written for them but its not "impossiable" to conceive of them ever being used with the gp2x imho, maybe commercial multiplayer games would come on wifi sd's who knows

the wifi sd cards work great in pda's so once some skilled linux developer produces a driver i can't see why they couln't be used in the gp2x. problem is they don't have storage space on them, or at least the one i have doesn't. if the usb can be used to connect periferals then you cuould have a usb wifi dongle in your pocket on a lead.

You can use the InfaRed port on a Palm or PPC to control a TV, but I dunno about WIFI.

At least farting ferrets are better than stinky stoats.
