Don't take this into a religious debate or bash on ANY religion or anything. I'm just giving you background info

You probably guessed, because UTAH and stuff. I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints, aka "Mormon".

If you didn't know, a lot of mormen Men serve a 2 year mission away from home to where ever the Church desides when they turn 19.

I've been 19 for a month or two now, and I just barely got my mission call today so this means, that I will be gone, as of March 22 of this year, for two years. No computers for the most part, I won't see my family for two years, i will only talk to them 4 times (one on each christmas and one on each Mother's Day)

anywho, so I'll be going to the Tulsa Oklahoma Mission, which is actually quite large geographically, and actually covers 4 states (Oklahoma, Missuri(sp?), Kansas, annnnnnnndd... something else, i'm too lazy to check, heh)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANYway, so, sometime in march I will be disappearing for two years then I will be back... hopefully by then the Physics pack will be out

so, I'll be around a little bit more, but i don't know how much, because i have a lot of stuff to buy before i leave.

I wasnt being an arse. I WAS stating that I dislike people -- of any religion -- who spread that religion door to door. Any. Even my own. I also was just saying, I never heard that mormons had to do that. It is odd to me. Good luck though. Also, I used to live near Kansas City, if you go through there, try and stay away from the Missouri side. It is all industrial near the bridge, and takes a while to get to the residental zone.

Don't be hasty in concluding that you will be without computer access/tasks for the whole two years. There is an interesting thread somewhere around here by a fellow who used DBPro to write a program that teaches/quizes about Bible stories, and the program is/was going to be published commercially. Missionary work, like so many other "old" institutions, is adapting and adopting technology to further its goals, and I wouldn't be surprised if a person with your talents, aptitude, and positive attitude at some point in the near future suddenly finds himself assigned to a task
that puts your unique skill base to the challenge. I am sure you will succeed is your assigned tasks. I actually almost discontinued visiting the forums because of the acrimonious flaming that was going on, until you started "missionary" work with your contributions. Good luck in your two year stint. I know they picked the right guy. It kept me in the fold.

nothing, jeku was just giving a firm warning
and, if someone were to give you a call and say "Hey this religion..." would you give them the light of day to put in a word We missionaries do what works

Quote: "Don't be hasty in concluding that you will be without computer access/tasks for the whole two years."

Yeah, I know what you're saying, but they have different people called to do different work. I (for the most part) will be riding my bike/driving a car house to house, teaching about the Bible and The Book of Mormon. Most state side missionaries are able to email close friends and relatives, but that's really all the computer stuff they really let you do. But in all honesty, It doesn't bother me one bit. I'm REALLY excited to give up the next to years of my life to my God and Religion
From my perspective, 2 years isn't long consitering, from my beliefs, God has given me 20 years so far, and many many more to come (hopefully ) 2 years is nothing to me. And it will help me learn to live off on my own, "become a man", teach me to not be so dependant on my parents.
And i've never really been outside of Utah, i've lived in this little bubble of mine. I've been to disneyland before, and that's about it outside of utah Never ridden on an airplane so that'll be fun

Quote: "wow what do you get?"

Two years of trials and fun, help me learn what life is like outside of this mormon bubble of mine
Nothing in return of a "Worldly" value
in fact, me and my family will be paying for this 100% (so, i don't get to completly learn to be indepandant from my parents quite yet )

Quote: "Joel - Good luck on the trip, man. Hopefully when you get back you'll come back here and let us know how it went "

thanks, and I WILL be back (don't erase meh username rich )
anywho, thanks for the encouragement I'm really excited, I honestly wish i could leave tomorrow!

And for anyone who cares:

That's my Mission , the shaded area is everywhere i can potentially be at any time between March 06 and March 08

I saw lots of Mormons from places such at Italy, Korea, Canada etc when I was shown around the Mormon temple. I asked for a bible, but they wouldn't give me one

Anyway, it was quite interesting, the people were nice to me, showed me around, and answered every question (as best they could).

Really!? I'm Canadian, and I've never met a mormon. All the english people I've met are some prodestant thing, and all the french people are catholic. Of course, I couldn't tell you the difference between a bible and a copy of Playboy. Are mormons prodestant, or somthing tottally different like buddism.

Sounds interesting!

"I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder day saints, aka "Mormon"."
I'd be interested to talk to you to understand "Mormons" more... of course by e-mail or something because you know how easily flame wars break out here when it comes to "religous" stuff

Good luck!

"Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder day saints" Surely thats "Latter" day? Unless I'm wrong and the mormons use ladders to climb closer to god/joseph smith/whatever

[Edit] PS Have you seen the Episode of South Park about Mormons? Its actually very good and doesn't slag you guys off to much (In fact it says that Mormons are very nice people ) if you watch it to the end

Not too sure, as Joel can confirm this if it's true, but Mormons have a completely different ideology than protestant Christians. They have another book, written by Joseph Smith in the 1800s (?) that they study. I'm not sure if, like the Jehovah's Witnesses, they call themselves Christians. I used to date a Mormon girl and went to their church a few times--- it was about 50% different than the protestant churches I'm used to

If I was going to do missionary work I'd probably choose an entirely different country or continent, like Asia.

when I was writing that... i said, is it with a "d" or a "t"? then i thought... BAH, who cares? fixed it for you

Quote: "Not too sure, as Joel can confirm this if it's true,"

a lot of different religions attack us and say we aren't "Christians", because of the name "Mormon" and whatever. which i think is stupid because in our name we are "The Church of Jesus Christ". But it's probably mostly because we ARE different from a lot of religions.
I don't want to really go into the religion much here, because that can cause problems but mormon.org is our church's site for non-members, kinda an introduction to our religion i guess and LDS.org is our main site.

Quote: "[Edit] PS Have you seen the Episode of South Park about Mormons? Its actually very good and doesn't slag you guys off to much (In fact it says that Mormons are very nice people ) if you watch it to the end "

No, i haven't seen it, but i've heard about it sounds really funny
"Mormons, mormons was the right church"

Quote: "If I was going to do missionary work I'd probably choose an entirely different country or continent, like Asia."

don't get to choose, the church sends you wherever they need you
I was actually hoping for Japan, i've wanted to go to japan since i was just a little lad
But i'm not dissapointed at all of where i'm going, i'm really excited, because i've never seen anything outside of Utah. And one of my best friends is from a city in my mission, and said that the weather storms are amazing, which makes me really excited
But I do have a friend who is currently surving in South Korea, and several friends down in Brazil and Argentina.

anywho, you can MSN me at joelthebod@hotmail.com if you want Peter_

you laugh but unfortunately alot of denominations think the same way. I just don't see why all the different denominations of christianity fight each other, and any religion for that matter... Then again I haven't purchased my copy of "The Bible II: Full Throttle" yet.

yes, that's us, ELDER in english, i don't know if your native language is different and that's how they spell elder there. but yeah, that's us

Quote: "those are jehovas witnesses bud... not mormons."

we do that too

Quote: "you laugh but unfortunately alot of denominations think the same way."

if you look into it at all, you'll notice that mormons actually don't believe only they will be in heaven, and we really don't think that there is only Heaven/Hell, there's actually three kingdoms of glory. I won't go into it much, but if you look on Mormon.org or LDS.org, you should be able to find more about that
or message me

the problem with religion is theres hundreads of different ones, and they cant all be right since all of them contradict each other therefore they are all false.

the whole point in religions is to give people something to believe in, say something bad happens then people may start beliving in god or whatever to hope by some miricle something bad wont happen again, untill i see some dude in robes part a river infront of me or a animal smuggler with 4000species of animals on his raft go past then im staying clear.

Are you sure this is true?

I mean, are you absolutely certain that it's not your parents plan to get rid of you for a couple of years until your old enough to move out?

No?

Cool, sounds like a good laugh - 2 years is really not that long, and you'll probably learn more than you have in the last 2 years of high school. Just don't go eating anything peculiar out there.
