Ok, I finally got my notebook PC and now I want to create a network to another computer that has internet. So, the one already has internet, and my notebook doesn't. I have an ethernet cable and they both are hooked in but how do I set it up, so my notebook will have internet through the other computer using the cable I have??? Any help would be great, but remember I know nothing about networks, so keep it simple, like instructions would give your parents. Thanks

Id say the easiest way is to get a router and plug your modem into the WAN/Uplink port of the router. then plug your notebook and your PC into the router.

Now if you want to surf wirelessly with your notebook, make sure you get a wireless router

I'm at a friends and I can't find his disk for his modem thingy. So I need to do it through a ethernet because I can't install the modem on my computer. This is just temporary, I need to register my computer and a whole bunch of software, in the future I'll get my own net and so on. So through a cable only, any ideas???

there is a plethora of websites that state how to do this, try google

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Uhh... okay, this is worse then I usally read...
Because I can't tell what you are doing, I'll tell you the no-nos

You DON'T connect computer to computer, you can, but then the other computer will need to traffic the info and will slow it down. So you are suppose to connect directly to the router.

You DON'T connect directly to the modem. In fact the modem should be left alone, just leave it connected to the router and everything will be fine.

But as for this post ^ This totally lost me. Your Laptop has Ethernet or Wireless, both don't need drivers unless they are external. As for why you need modem drivers, I have no clue.

If you want wireless you need a wireless router, and you don't need any crap software that companys want you to use, windows uses up enough memory running IT's software, to install an other set is crazy. What you do do is

Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, Right Click "Wireless Network Connection", Properties, Wireless Networks, and set up everything from there.

Else, just connect the ethernet cable....
O' and by the way, in "Network Connections" disable the default connection if you have one (you know, that pesky modem connection?)

you're done...
networks cards, whether they are internal or external, need drivers.
and his modem probably is a DIAL-UP modem... believe it or not, those need drivers too! EVEN if they're integrated to the motherboard...

Also you cannot use a standard cat5 ethernet cable to connect 2 computers directly. You need a crossover cable that switches the wires inside to make the electrical signals line up correctly.

If you go this route, you need ICS or a proxy service running on the machine that is connected to the internet, and you need to configure the other machine for DHCP or set it manually in a lan configuration and set your browser to point to the proxy running on the first machine.

I've done this many times.
