Is it that most people seem to think RPG almost always means mideval, or does it just mean any game in which you play the roll of a character in a well though-out storyline? o.0 it seems like RPG means mideval to lots of people, and that annoys me...

an rpg is a role playing game, where, you essentially play the role of a character in a certain plot

From Wikipedia:
Quote: "Computer role-playing games (CRPGs), often shortened to simply role-playing games (RPGs), are a type of video or computer game that traditionally uses gameplay elements found in paper-and-pencil role-playing games. The term "CRPG" is more often used when referring to titles made for personal computers, as opposed to video game consoles. Modern RPG games encompass a wide range of styles and types of engines and have significantly branched out.

RPG gameplay elements can be found in real-time strategy games, first-person shooters, third-person shooters, and some other types such as massively multiplayer online games. However, games that are actually called just "RPGs" are usually limited to top-down perspective point-and-click and some third-person perspective types."

I can think of many examples of CRPG's that aren't medieval, for example KOTOR, Vampire Bloodlines: The Masquerade, Fallout etc.

Alas, because of Lord of the Rings and D&D, most people do associate RPG with classic medieval fantasy.

But there are a great many non-medieval-fantasy RPGs!

Deus Ex, System Shock, Planescape Torment, Fallout, EVE, Asherons Call, Shenmue, Vampire the Masquerade, Neuromancer, many many text based adventures and more.

Still waiting for a steampunk RPG, an underwater RPG, a Spelljammer RPG, a caveman RPG or a robot RPG. So much potential.

eh?

Final Fantasy (VIII at least - only one I’ve played) had flying cities, guardian force spirit thingies, tanks and a whole load of other non-medieval stuff.

Panzer Dragoon Saga I've never played so can't comment.

Deus Ex, System Shock, Planescape torment are all set in the future I think (certainly not medieval).

Fallout is set after a nuclear war.

Vampire Bloodlines The Masquerade is set in modern day LA.

KOTOR is set in the Star Wars universe obviously.

None of the others are medieval too.

I think you may be confusing medieval with fantasy.

Vampire Bloodlines was actually one of the very original (and very popular) pen and paper RPG's.

yup, I belive it was a LARP (Live-Action Role-Playing) game (i.e you actually dress up as your charecter and play as them) though I've never even seen a pen and paper RPG let alone played one. The Masquerade (video game) was fun though as you could play as an insane vampire, which I found rather fun for some reason.

vampire was a pen and paper game, there was a murps larp for it aswell. (murps or gurps). Then it was made into a video game, then a sequel to teh video game, was prety neat. Never went to the vampire larp though cause I cant stand goths, especially ones who think they are really vampires. I go to normal fantasy larps though.

I love Planescape Torment! It was one of the first truly unique RPGs i've played. I wish they'd make a new one.

I have never played a character that could get vital information by plucking out his eye and replacing it with an eye that was taken out and pickled in a jar years earlier. Or getting an ring by taking a knife and cutting out your own intestines to find the ring hidden inside.

first off when i think of rpgs i think fantasy and not "midevil"...And technically for a game to be a true Role Playing Game you have to play a definitive role in the world...hence why alot of MMORPGs lack RPG mechanics...

But i like cyberpunk rpgs...IE Shadowrun...

Who am i...i don't know anymore...its been a long time since ive walked here...

Vampire The Masquerade was a pen and paper RPG brought out by White Wolf. It has an 'alternative modern' setting (ie real world, but darker).
There was various others released like it - Vampire Dark Ages, Werewolf, Mage, one about the fae (that's the faeries), Wraith, and I'm sure there's loads more.

They were made in to several Live Action versions - some 'official' some unnoficial. The official ones were known to be a little more political than the unofficial ones - I played an unofficial one; we used toy guns. And yes - there are too many needy goths there.

Then the made the PC games

That endith the history lesson.

As for fantasy/medieval - most RPGs that are 'medieval' are actually fantasy - they have magic and dragons. Then many fantasy ones have heavy medieval elements - they have knights, swords, princesses, castles, bandits, and the general technology level is somewhere between steelwork and gunpowder. Even if that castle is flying, or the princess has wings - it's still 'medieval fantasy' imo.

"underwater RPG" "a caveman RPG" I've considered making both of those Although by Caveman I mean you'd have to have dinos as well, which I know some people would hate

Its been said, but Panzer Dragoon Saga, FFVII and the original Pokemon games are great examples of well balanced and thought out turnbased rpg games.

Essentially "RPG" means role playing game, but in that case surely Sonic would be a roleplaying game, cos you play the role of a blue hedgehog. You could argue that and RPG is defined by character progression, learning new skills as you progress, but by that definition, Mario 64 would be an RPG. Personally I figure its where you play a role, and have stat based systems where you "level up" and can learn new skills etc by getting more points in certain stat levels. Perosnally I still feel games like Zelda are more "adventure" than RPG though perhaps because I like rpgs to have turn based battles so you can really asses you stats, strategy etc...

Yup and I'm sure some people would hate it - just like some people hate 'medieval' games with magic in them, or modern games with laser guns, or crates with ammo in them, or telephone boxes with roast chickens in them, or...

You get the idea. Sometimes, reality must take a second place to fun in games

I know this kid that made the statement (a long time ago when he was in 8th grade).

"I'd be cool to go back to medieval times with all that magic and stuff."

He wasn't being funny either... he was just dumb. That same week I was playing Wolfenstein 3D and he asked me "Who's that guy on the wall?" I looked at him weird and said "You mean the picture of Hitler?!?". He said "Who?".

That day I feared for the future of mankind.

"I'd be cool to go back to medieval times with all that magic and stuff."

What some people believe to be "magic" is actually possible with enough study and willpower. Of course, its never going to be hollywood style flashing lights, turnign into frogs and flying people, but if you go back further and further into history there actually WAS a strong belief on magic, and it was possible to study and learn it as an art. Its only since more popular religions came along and then hollywood that people got misconceptions about what is and isn't considerred "magic" at least things like Buffy and the Craft get it maybe 50% accurate, 50% "bull to make it more exciting" Essentially Pagan "magic" boils down to the same thing as christian "prayer". Its only misconceptions and poor translations that gave people weird ideas about it - for example "flying" is really "astral progection" - no where near the same thing Closer to "real" magic nowadays would be hyponsis, the power of suggestion, and buddist style mental training, its just about improving the power of your mind and body to do things otherwise impossible, and also learning how to train/channel positive "energy" around people and things, the thing that science can detect but not name, and some spiritual types would (perhaps wrongly) assume is your "soul".

I DON'T want to start a religious debate or anything, just pointing out that in medieval times, magic "did" exist, just nowhere near how hollywood and games would imagine it

Yeah... we don't need another one to get locked when it's just getting good. There's a difference between "magic" and the "appearance of magic". If we were to take a laptop and go back to medieval times we would probably be called Wizzards because we have a box of light and sound. To us it's a tool... to them magic. People that were on the cutting edge of technology always appeared to have magic powers to the people that didn't know it was technology that gave them the "power".

History is full of "magical" inventions that were lost to time (I think mainly because the Library of Alexandria was destroyed by fire).

Here's a link to the Bagdad Battery... a battery that was made 2,000 years ago:

exactly - lots of things that weren't explaininable by their level of science back then were considered magic, when actually they just invloved focussing your mind on the task at hand and learning or inventing something that no-one else had. Don't forget that people often tricked others into believing they were "magical" by feeding them "potions" and "spells" made of of hallucinagenic mushrooms and such But it still means that in the mindset of the average person back then, magic was VERY real

I just used "Grog" for years... then I decided I needed a last name for adventure games. I remembered how much fun I had playing all the Zork games... so I picked "Grueslayer". "Grog Grueslayer" is what i've been using ever since... on Diablo... on Ultima Online... on here... everywhere.
