There's a new competition running on Ginger Monkey Games http://www.ginger-monkey.com called Emotion in Games: Comedy. The idea is to make a comedy game, and you can do it either as a .exe or Flash game - so that includes Dark Basic.

I think you've gone blind. It's the huge ad in the center of the screen that says "COMPETITION Emotion in Games"

Ginger Monkey gently puts down his banana juice and scrambles to the top of his proverbial tree of destiny. Cupping his furry hands around his mouth, his rhetoric booms fourth:

If a kick in the ass is requested for Pincho Paxton it shall be provided, albeit in some kind of virtual form which is easy to deliver and difficult to define as assault, such as a picture of an ass and an attacking boot. Although this cannot be promised, only suggested as a potential prize to the winner.

In answer to Hawkeye and Manticore Night, as somebody rightly pointed out there is nothing in the rules banning dark humour in competition entries. Neither Oraculaca, is there any mention of a game having to be started after the competition has started.

The aim of the competition is merely to bring to fruition a much under explored genre of gaming, from those most capable of defining it – independent developers. In addition it is an opportunity to win some kind of stuffed toy which is not cursed in any way, shape or indeed form, and is likely to bring you nothing but unending joy. Ginger Monkey is however searching his tree for any possible further prizes which may be revealed at a later date (or may not if he is feeling cruel – mua hahaha!).

That is all.

Quick update guys, you can now register your entry on the Ginger Monkey Games website - this allows you to receive email updates on competition developments, such as (hopefully) some additional prizes. We wont use or store your email for anything other than competition updates once you have registered your entry.

We've also started a forum thread specifically for the competition where you can discuss your progress.

Cheers!

Just a question, but I've come up with a truly brilliant idea for this compo, but I'd really like to make a full version of it which I can sell.
So I'd like to know if I could submit a demo version which is only one sixth the size of the entire game (would still have a good chunk of the funny story included), and then sell the final version when I finish it.
I know most compos don't allow this, but from what I've read on your site, your compo has slightly different rules than most.

Ginger Monkey scratches his chin, and raises one eye brow while sipping his banana juice through a straw.

Bizar Guy - Ginger Monkey is not in the habbit of excluding anything, unless there is a very good reason to. However, it would be very unfair on the people who entered a full game if your game ended up one of the winners. Also Ginger Monkey's comedy award branding can only be reserved for a game which he has cast his sharp eye over the entirety of. As such the decision is that you may enter a demo, but you would have to be excluded from a chance of winning the prizes. Your demo would still get coverage on the site as one of the entries, and the demo would still be downloadable from the site.

All competition entrants maintain full rights over their games, but also give permission for Ginger Monkey to make them permanently downloadable on the Ginger Monkey Games site.

Ginger Monkey seeks to maintain a welcoming atmosphere, but also a fair one. I hope this answers your question adequatly.

It's also worth mentioning that Ginger Monkey is currently developing a number of publishing models for indie games, so publishing deals for future games or indeed competition entries are not out of the question in the future, but would only be considered for discussion after the prizes have been awarded so there can be no accussation of bias in the judging.

Above all Ginger Monkey is seeking to encourage the exploration of new avenues in game design, because indie developers are uniquely positioned to do so - anything and everything is always welcome.

Darn, oh well, I'll just have to make it and have it be free. (It will most likely be shorter though, as I'll have to be competely finished for the compo)
I'm telling you, I don't think there's ever been a game like the one I'm thinking of... And it's such an ingenious idea... Well, I'll let people deside how good an idea it is when I post a wip on it.

Bump. Well, my left ear is pretty screwed up tonight, the eustachian is sorta collapsed and everything is muffled. So, while I can't do anything with music, I can code! Got a very simple engine up and running, collision works nicely, haven't gotten around to fiddleing with the sliding part of things but hey it'll come. Puttin' the finishing touches on the design document now, it's a big 'un alright, this game will take a lotta work but I think I can I think I can I think I can...

edit: woah, just glanced at the compo's homepage again and there's been an upgrade in the prizes:

Quote: "The first place prize will now include a full download licence for Binary Sun's special effects creation package ExGen and a Dark Game SDK shareware license courtesy of The Game Creators in addition to the previously announced prizes.

The second place prize will now include a full download licence for Binary Sun's special effects creation package ExGen and a Dark Game SDK Freeware license courtesy of The Game Creators in addition to the previously announced prizes.

The third place prize will now include a Dark Game SDK Freeware license courtesy of The Game Creators in addition to the previously announced prizes."

Yes Manticore Night, crude language and risque is fine (how do you get your little accent above the e?). However try to steer clear of super offensive or racist type stuff cos that's just not very nice. Anything up to and including South Park levels of crassness is probably acceptable I should think.

*bump*

Just out of interest, where the rules state an .exe or .swf, does that mean the game must only be an .exe (as in, no other files except an exe) or are external (included) media files allowed?

Seated at the top of his tree, Ginger Monkey gazes out at a golden sunset, which tints the entire jungle a beautiful orange.

David R the answer to your query is that yes external media files certainly are allowed. Perhaps the wording of the rules was slightly ambigous, for this Ginger Monkey apologises.

Ginger Monkey is far less certain where he stands with Manticore Night's situation. In no way does Ginger Monkey seek to censor any of the content in the games, after all nobody appreciates more that often great comedy is born from great irony and often great irony requires that a creator is less than squeaky clean when it comes to PC issues.

I think the key is in the delivery. Comedians in other media who use offense as a tool of humour get away with it because they make it clear to rational and intelligent people that they are being ironic and their art does not reflect any true intent or opinion. South Park is a fine example, as are some of the characters in Little Britain. Monkey Dust pulled this technique of brilliantly and Brass Eye took the idea right to the edge of controversey.

The conclusion then is this. Please feel free to submit your game in all its intended offensive glory. However if it is clear that the intention is to offend rather than amuse then the judges will look down on your entry from there extremely high horses and thus your chances of winning will be reduced. If it is clear that the intention is amusement using offense as a tool then the judges will cackle with glee and award you justly.

To put it simply. If your game says "All Monkeys are evil and I am trying to incite the world to kill all Monkeys" while holding a burning Monkey flag then Ginger Monkey may be concerned. If on the other hand your game says "All Monkeys are Evil and I am going to hunt them all to their death" and the character speaking said words is infact a banana who has lost all of his banana family to brutal Monkeys then Ginger Monkey will probably spot that the line was spoken in jest.

Ginger Monkey hopes this most wooly of politico-comedio issues has been made slightly clearer for you Manticore Night, and that Ginger Monkey's explanation is not as ambigous as the rule about exe's which had David R scratching his noggin.

A mere two months remaining now comedy head - better get cracking if you want a shot at those prizes. Also Ginger Monkey remains slightly disappointed by the lack of commitment on the subject of Predator versus Suicidal Fish Head Man. It's a tough philosophical question for sure, but venturing some sort of opinion can't hurt can it?
