Interestingly the graphics chip manufacturers with the real revoultionary ideas aren't nvidia or ati, they are Matrox. Matrox cards have always been a better build and output quality than all others, and they have some really cool 3d technology in development which will not use polygons, but instead render everything by pixel, not just light/colour it. A similar thing was done years ago with "voxels" but with such low technology at the time the indea was very limited. If you think about it, if you had a high res display that modelled everything by separate pixels, depths, physics and light properties, that wasy you could literally create anything you can imagine, with no limitations. Won't come into fruition for 10 years or so for "proepr" usage, but really, thats the most promising technology overhaul i've seen in years.
I didn't think the character animation was that bad, but I agree that no proper 3d title has got the proper "sonic" run and movement from the 2d games yet.
